Unless the clips are old and brittle. Then they will break no matter what you do.
You have to break more than half for it to rattle around though. I think I broke two but fits on just fine. You can buy replacement clips at the dealer if you're that worried about it.
P.S. it's easier with two people on the bottom ones.

I decided it was time to replace them all. $10 on eBay for tenpack of OEM.

I got the grill clips off eBay. They are identical aftermarket but who knows where I've put them. I ended up using small black zip ties and trimmed the excess.

After removing the grill multiple times I finally understood how they work just few days ago and I no longer break the clips. Like the direction says, you go at it w your finger or screw driver to push the long tap in the middle up or down. It's actually counter intuitive but if you do it right, the clips should remain on the car body and slip out from the grill. Top ones you have to go from the bottom, but the bottom edges are easily accessible.

I recently removed and installed two grilles. As others have mentioned get an extra long flat head screw driver and push down on the little levers on the bottom attachments. On the top ones I push down on the levers from the side. Constantly be pulling (somewhat gently) so that when you disengage a clip you have separated it so you can focus on the others. The grille has some flex and the plastic is stronger than it looks. The only part that is delicate are the longer vertical fins (for lack of a better word). It is frustrating to remove and install these, but it just takes patience and trial and error.
