How to set the timing marks

Do you just turn the crankbolt to get the 3 timing marks all lined up? This is my first timing belt attempt.

Also, i am getting ready to replace my water pump, idlers, timing belt, and was curious does the the crankbolt turn the camshafts as well? And should i get the marks lined up before i take the belt off or dont worry about it untill before i put the new belt back on?

Thanks for any input.

Set the timing before you pull off the belt. Pull the upper timing cover off and turn the crank bolt until the timing mark on the crank pulley lines up with the mark on the lower cover. Look at the cam pulley to make sure the timing marks match up with the backing plate. If the marks point down turn the crank 180 degrees to line everything up.

My other suggestion beyond what everyone has said is that if the new belt doesn't have alignment marks on it add them. Take some white out and put a strip on each pulley/belt where they meet. Transfer those marks to the new belt. Some new belts already have marks like that some don't but it will give you another way to make sure things are all lined up.

Thanks and a few more questions!

Soooo when turning the crankbolt do i turn it clockwise when looking at the engine from the outside or clockwise when in the runner? Also my water pump came with the newer metal gasket. Do i still need to use fipg?

Thanks again. I am excited/ nervous to do this maintenance, so i really appreciate your help.

Clockwise when standing in front of the engine--as if you were tightening the crankshaft bolt.

No FIPG needed or desired, just clean the engine side surface and torque to spec.

Here is my favorite write-up:http://www.nwtoys.com/forum/tech-article-submissions/1261-5vz-fe-timing-belt-4.html

My own technique for getting the belt on involves two binder clips on the cam pulleys:

If the belt won't slide on, loosen the bolt on the top idler (green in my pic) so that it tilts up a bit. That will allow you to slide it on, then retighten the idler pulley bolt. Good luck!

NO normal TDC mark

Here's one for the group to think about and hopefully give me an answer.
In trying to line up the crank shaft timing to TDC, there is NO indentation of timing make on it. However there is a flat area on it about 1 inch long where the normal teeth would be. Is this flat area the TDC mark??

So I finally the tiny divot in the crank timing gear. I guess I need better glasses and a third arm from the center of my chest to make this job a bit easier. Thanks
