How to tell radiator age?

Before you take a chance on an ebay/amazon sourced radiator with all of the shipping damage problems, you might want to check your local Toyota dealers parts website. I called around for a rad for my 2000 runner & was quoted around $240 for an oem radiator. I happened to stumble on their website & found the same radiator for $111.00. I took the info to the parts guy there & he was able to have the part drop shipped to their location & saved me $23.00 in shipping. The radiator came in with zero damage to the box / radiator. Denso pn:16410-AZ011 rad. I installed it last night. The new radiator was quite a bit heavier than the old one I removed. Perfect fit, no problems so far. P.S. general maintenance parts like filters & such dirt cheap too. Toyota oil filters under $5.

If I were to install an external transmission cooler, what is the one most recommended?

I and others used the Trucool low pressure drop 4589. But others use the BM unit. Both made by the same company from the research I've done a few years ago. Before Dana bought then around 2 years ago they were their own company called Long Manufacturing and this was one of their products. The Trucool is self regulating. I don't know if the BM is or not.
