how to work the 4WD?

Ok guys, so this is probably a simple question, i traded my explorer (All Wheel Drive) for a 1999 4runner limited 4 Wheel drive. I know on the sun visor it says how to engage the 4 wheel drive but i was wondering if anyone can explain it real quick on this thread, do you change it while stopped or in motion? thanks guys and im looking forward to begin modding my 4runner

To sort of answer your question, yes you can engage the 4wd(hi) while in motion, but you have to do it under a certain MPH. I can't remember what it is right now but your owner's manual should have that info as well(If you have that handy).

I shift mine in and out whenever I want. I don't need no stinkin manual:nerd:

You can switch into 4hi when moving, I think you can engage it at up to 50 mph, but I've never done it. I always stop first just because thats what I've always done. Obviously to go to 4lo you need to be stopped.

Mine is the manual "J" shift transfer case (manual transmission too). I shift in and out of 2HI/4HI on the road and trail up to 50mph. To ease things I just let off the gas (I don't push in the clutch) and shift. The other cool thing about having a manual trans is that I can shift out of 4LO and into HI on the move. Again I lift the gas and shift. I usually shift to HI and down shift the trans and keep going.

The claim is that you can do it under 50 as stated BUT, as discussed on here before, I would highly recommend against it. Number one most people dont change fluid in their transfer cases, diffs, etc. Number two the fact is that our cars arent new anymore and if you want to extend the life of your car and its parts its better to just stop and engage it. In an emergency do what is needed but for everyday driving id just stop. I tried it in my car at only 10 mph in a parking lot and it gave me a decent amount of resistance and just did not feel good. I say save your transfer case and just stop before you want to shift from 2 to 4 wheel drive.

I shift on the fly every winter on the highway. The roads will have long patches of snow then clean. I'll be in and out 50 times to the mountains in the winter.

PS. When to use 4LO? When I'm wheeling! I get more torque and more control while reducing strain on the drivetrain. Once a friend was wheeling with me, he was in HI and overheated his auto trans. The engine had the power to pull him thru the obstacles but the strain was too much fro his trans.

Don't be afraid or think it's not manly to be in 4LO.

I wish I had 2LO!
