When I did mine last year, it was kind of a PITA being that the adhesive was pretty hardened. Regardless, I was on a mission. Also, there's several other threads on this already if you can find them.

I used a hair drier to heat up the adhesive and then used fishing line to wiggle behind the emblems to cut through the softened adhesive. This part was easy enough. BUT once they were off, there was a good bit of adhesive left on the paint. So I used some 3M adhesive remover and rubbed and rubbed and rubbed and rubbed etc til I got most of it off. I then cleaned up the emblems and sanded, primed, then painted w/ duplicolor trim paint. Reapplied them w/ 3M liquid adhesive that I got at walmart.
I also used the same trim paint to re-paint the bumper trim, the rear spoiler, and the roof rack to make things look new again. It's held up well.

Hope that helps and good luck!

I just blacked my emblems out monday, with Plasti Dip, looks great and gives it a rugged rubber look.

Dude lets see some pics! I just finished sanding and painting mine black pearl. Used Testors Model Black Gloss Paint and Clear Coat on top. Major PITA! and after all that work they have been on a day and the paint chipped :ybrick:

Let them dry forever in between coats but even though its an improvement from gold, I'm thinking that dip idea or maybe even a color would look better. Ive seen some rigs with red on the front emblems. Has anyone colored the rear emblems red?

Too late to post pics of mine. Ill fire them up tomorrow.

Plasti Dip is awesome, comes in a spray can now, can buy it at Lowes. I'll post some pics in a bit. No sanding, and if you dont like it you are able to just peel the rubber off.

Here are some pictures of the finished product. 3 coats, one every 30 minutes, probably could have done 4-5. But still looks fantastic, let me know what you think. I picked this idea up from a buddy of mine with a GTI. Hope this helps!

thanks everybody! i've been wanting to do this for a while and didn't know where to start or how to exactly do it.

Looks great trailhead! I think that is what I am gong to do next....but mine is a dark green...so it won't stand out as much as yours...but I need to paint the roof rails anyway as they are peeling.

This is excellent...I can think of a few uses for this product.

I was thinking the same thing. I googled it and found a Subaru forum talking about it...looks pretty good and this stuff could be used for all kinds of applications.

My only concern would be how it would hold up in direct sunlight, but some on that Subaru forum said it has held up well.

Yeah it seems to hold up really well. Just put enough coats. One thing to be careful is, you cant just tape off things with Plasti Dip like paint. Like when i did my back center pannel, i would tape it off, then when i was done with every coat, i would take the tape off while it was still wet. Because otherwise if you wait and take the tape off, it will have dried into that rubber substance and will be connected to your work and want to take it off also. Test it on a few things if you want. But thats about it. I painted my other emblems off of my truck and it works great.

Glad you mentioned that...makes sense and I wwould have done that exact thing...haha.

Did you take the license plate holder completely off when you painted it? How does that come off?

The plate holder was the one thing I did not remove, seemed like a lot of work so I did method of taping it like I mentioned. All I did was removed my license plate and covered the handle and lights.

This was the way I did it, proved to be pretty easy.
Sorry about the size of the pictures....phone pics

I sprayed my rails on top yesterday with the PlastiDip...they were peeling...I didn't prep them at all...just sprayed over everything. Taped off the rails and then put some old towels under the actual cross bars. Looks a lot better than it did! I also taped off the license plate holder and sprayed it too...looks awesome. I only put 2 coats on all of it...I will probably go back and put at least 2 more on it just so it will be covered a bit more. Looks awesome though.

I think I am going to spray my gray front bumper bottom too. It will make it look brand new. Good stuff and easy to use!

That looks really awesome! You've have inspired me to do it to my Runner. Black emblems on a silver 4runner is gonna look good!

Just wondering, seeing on this thread how to take the emblems off, clean and paint. But did you have any trouble lining them up when you're reinstalling them? That's my concern...

THe best way to make sure that u line them up correctly after they are painted is to lay down a side and bottom border of blue painter's tape on ur car BEFORE u take off them emblems. this way they will be exactly in the same place but alot better looking in black!
