HU install thread?

i picked up a Scion T1809 off ebay and got the Ipod cable with it. I've been searching for a thread I seem to remember showing the procedure for removing the centre console/dash pieces in order to swap the stereo. Does that thread exist or did I dream it? anybody got it bookmarked?

nevermind. just did it. super easy install. took me an hour, more than half of which was just cleaning the crap out of the crevises of the dash. the original owner was a smoker. gross stuff back there....

Which iPhone do you have? I have the 3GS and was wondering if you get the error screen that reads something like "this device is not compatible with this version of iPhone" when you plug it in? I am wanting to do this same install but was wondering if:
1. it was compatible with the 3GS or newer versions of iPhones and
2. where your cable comes out from the back of the HU? If I were to do this would I just plug the cable into the back of the HU and drill a hole somewhere to run the cable through to plug it into the iPhone?

I have the iPhone 4, and just installed the 1809 with the iPod cable. When I plug the iPhone in, it displays two messages, the one similar to what you described ("This device not optimized for iPhone" or something) and another one that says "This device does not support charging" or something like that. You just have to hit "OK" to both messages, then it lets you play your music. So, to answer your questions:

1. Yes, newer iPods and iPhones are compatible, but will not charge without an adapter like this: dockStubz Charge Converter and 30-pin Pass-Through Adapter. Also, you will have to deal with those annoying pop-ups every time you plug the phone in. (I'm assuming the one about charging will go away if using the adapter.)

2. I ran the cable under the center console and have it coming out of one of the switch blanks. I used a dremel to make an opening in one of the switch blanks large enough for the cable to pass through. It looks pretty sweet!

One other thing to note, the 1809 lets you control the iPhone using two different modes: direct and non-direct. Non-direct allows you to control the iPhone via the head unit and retains all of the factory steering wheel controls. Direct allows you to control the iPhone as you normally would using headphones/whatever, but the steering wheel controls will not function (except the volume control, which always is functional).

I just installed my t1808, love it.

I did the same thing, spent over an hour but most of it was cleaning. I wish I got the 1809 but I got a smoking deal on the 1808.
