That's complete bunk...

I hooked an amp and a woofer to my wife's hu and it sounds great. If and when I replace the seperates and add an amp for the high's it will sound even better.

However, that being said, you will definitely hear better sound with a really nice aftermarket hu. Not only will it sound better, you will have more features and options too.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd rate the stock system about a 3. You can improve the sound to about a 7 with the stock unit, but to get to 10 you need something of higher quality. And keep in mind that higher quality is NOT a $110 Pioneer from Walmart.

Upgrade everything now and if and when you decide to upgrade the hu be sure to get a good one.

if i do purchase a hu what does it have to have in order for my steering wheel controls to work

PAC would most likely have an interface for the head unit to enable to work with the facotry steering wheel controls. So if ya get an after market HU you'd be able to keep them. I have a PAC SWI-ALP on my Alpine HU for my steering wheel controls, works great of course.

whats pac
PAC Audio

They offer a line of add-on adapters that let you use OEM steering wheel controls with aftermarket headunits.

While on the subject of steering wheel controls, does anybody know if it's possible to replace the fake buttons on the right side of the steering wheel with functional buttons? And if so, will the various PAC SWI units support them?

I have read on this forum that some of the Eclipse Hu's are a direct plug in for the steering wheel controls...not sure if this is true though.

I swapped my HU for the Scion which was a huge improvement and my steering wheel controls work perfectly and it even plays MP3 discs (over 150 songs on one disc :) )

This weekend I plan on installing my amp (see sig) using a scion wire harness that gives 4 rca's 2 for the front channel and 2 for the rear-will be posting results...
