I recently had both inboard cv boots rip, and did not catch it soon enough to re-boot, so I decided to replace the CV's yesterday (I was hoping to do a re-boot to get a better understanding of how to disassemble and reassemble, as I am hoping to do a long travel conversion down the road). I've been hearing a whurring noise prior to the replacement, usually indicative of a wheel hub bearing issue. It's tone/frequency changes with the faster I drive, as well as how much I turn the wheel (noise goes away in turns). I thought that replacing CV's would have stopped the noise, as I don't get the traditional wheel play associated with a faulty hub, but that was not the case. I did notice that both hub seals were worn, and the driver side looks very dry when compared to the passenger side. Unrelated, I also noticed there is some grease starting to come out of the upper ball joint boot.
Could the whurring noise be caused by the hub, despite it going away when I go in to turns? Do I consider it lost, or can I add grease/oil to it? What type of grease/oil should I apply?
Thanks,
