I am not feeling good vibrations

I have had my 2004 V8 Limited for a few months and it has 74,000 miles on it. It is evident based on the maintenance records and condition of the vehicle that the previous (and only) owner took decent care of the vehicle. As you all know, once you have had a vehicle for sometime you become aclimated to how it runs and how it sounds. And this Toyota runs smooth, the engine is quiet, the transmission shifts normal and smooth.

However recently, and I am sure it was not like this when I purchased it, I have noticed something. Basically, at around the 1500 rpm range, while accelerating or anytime the engine is increasing power to the drivetrain, I get a resonating noise similar to a 4 cylinder car with a exaust beginning to go bad. I can feel the vibration through the pedal, steering wheel, shifter and hard plastic floormats. Now anything above or below this RPM range it is not noticeable. Also, this does not happen 100%, but I would say a majority of the time it is present. I would say it resembles two mechanisms not quite meshing together smoothly...that's about as well as I can describe it.

In addition...not sure if this is related to the above issue, at a stop, with the brake pressed and the transmission engage, a noise will resonate through the vehicle, or should I say a vibration similar in feel as described above. So obviously something in the drivetrain is out of sync. In nuetral or park, revving the engine does not bring about any of these symptoms. The engine is very quiet and smooth. So, one part of me says this is just part of a vehicle getting old and the other part says pinpoint the issue and the extended warranty may cover repair or adjustment.

Any input or advice with this would be appreciated. Other than this issue, I love my 4Runner and I look forward to many years of driving enjoyment.

Slight sidebar here-I purchased the vehicle from out of town, however we just recently were lucky (I hope) enough to have a new dealership open here in my city in Northern Indiana. The president of the dealership is Dave Illingsworth, former GM of Lexus and also VP at Toyota Corporation. I am anticipating a good experience with service as I think he would set a high standard for his business. I have yet to do the 75k mile service but this new dealership will be my destination.

I have experienced the same God-awful annoying noise in my 2004 V6 SR5, and mine only has 68k on the odo.... Vibrates/resonates at around 50 mph, but I do hear it at slower cruising speeds.

I swear it's those awful Dunlop Grandtrek AT-20s. I know it's not the engine, cuz I've thrown it into neutral at speed and the noise continued. It also faintly disappears if I row on the steering wheel from side to side, but returns when I straighten her out.

The ONLY other thing I can think of, is I've got a bad U-joint.... one went bad in my older 1990 Runner, and it made an awful vibration/resonation noise that echoed throughout the rear cargo area. That might explain that driveshaft thump I get when I start from a dead stop.

Let me know if you find anything out!

For an additonal thought, how fast does this resonate? Remmeber the drive-shaft if it is a u-joint will rotate 4 times for every wheel revolution, so to narrow it down a bit. Listen to the speed at which the resonation occurs. Faster than the wheel rotation narrows it down to the driveline axle and it could be a u-joint going bad, if the resonation matches wheel rotation your are looking at issues with the axles/wheel (bearing, cv's, wheel balance).

I had a u-joint go in my 97' and I took it off and had a new one pressed in by a local shop fairly quick.

Thanks for the response. So, with the U joint, is it's rotation based on vehicle speed or engine RPM?
The noise I describe while driving happens in the 1500 RPM range, goes away (or is unnoticable because of frequency)...the vehicle shifts and goes through the 1500 RPM range along with the noise reapearing...you get the picture.
