I am starting to dislike my 4Runner...

Don't get me wrong, the things awesome, I can run over anything I want and have fun.

I've seriously done everything to it (aside from new mirrors) to make it look like its an SR5, but it's never going to be, not with that stupid underpowered 3RZ... either that or the 5250 lbs the thing weighs.

I've seriously been thinking about ditching the stupid thing for another 99, maybe an SR5 4X4... or hell, even a tacoma double cab.

Dumping money into mine will eventually lead me to a point where too little power or no 4wd will make my ride utterly useless... I'll just take the things I want off of it and ditch the ****er.

What do you think I could get for it?

or maybe im just currently pissed off... if I do a good mod (like exhaust) ill probably be happy again... all of you guys will V6's... really... it's sad not even being able to peel out... or let alone, flooring it and literally watching cars just pass you as my 4Runner makes all the noise it can... embarrassing.

I just need some input... what the hell should I do? I feel like I should just do exhaust, do what's necessary, then just rid it from my life... or keep it and at least get something else with 4WD and stuff.

Is your 4runner a 4x4? also is it a 5speed? if you are looking for more power get it supercharged or turbo charged. yoou could also look for the performance cams TRD made for your engine. although they are very very hard to find. have you done a exhaust system?
was their a major difference in the truck after you put the headers on?
 
I know exactly what you're talking about!

I'm in the process of researching turbo kit companies. I would prefer to get a turbo over a supercharger. I'll keep you updated because I am 100% set on getting one. Having something like 140rwhp is embarrassing! I'm not looking to make my truck do 0-60 in 5 seconds, but I would be happy with 7 seconds over the current 10+!:awais:
 
well I kind of know how you feel ..cuz nothing can compare to that rush when you step onto that aceleration pedal and your t4r just feels like it is going to fly...
If you are not happy with it and you want something really powerful and 4x4....get you another one...but if you put all the love an work into all those mods rethink if you really want to get rid of her you might regreat ant the end...
Now...if you are seriously get to the point of thinkin of putting her for sale...I would be so interested in buying her so i can have a ride back home when I go on vacation every year instead of renting....

But to be honest with you...regardless of the Horse Power and all that 4x4 that you probably dream about...you have a really nice t4r... it is beautiful
 
I've been looking forever for a 1999-2000 4Runner 5spd with locker. It's impossible up here and when I compare to the prices in the US, it's ridiculous. They go on average about $12,500 here. :( If I had one, I'd never let it go. I do think it's a little weak, but I just love the feeling of being in a truck and this is the only one that's on a truck platform and is an SUV that I can get in manual. Also, I drove the 4Runner twice, but fell in love with it after the first time.
 
That's why I tell people to get a V6 4wd in the first place.

FYI- 3rd gens weigh in at a tad over 4000lbs;Limiteds are slightly heavier.
 
Maybe it is time for you to look for a new 4runner. I think your in a state right now where only a purchase for the 4runner will satisfy you, and even then it only last for a little while. Might as well get a new 4runner now instead of waste a good bit of money on upgrades to your current one.

I hope your not expecting too much from the V6 though, it doesn't have a TON of power, more than the four cylinder though.
 
If you're getting an automatic one, then I would suggest the new trail edition one cause you get rear locker and more powerful engine in the 4th gen. If I didn't hate automatic transmissions so much, I'd be interested in the 4th gen trail edition. Unfortunately, even if I get over the automatic transmission, the Trail Edition is not available in Canada so I'd be back to looking at 3rd gens again or go to the US to buy it.
 
I'm kinda in a similar place, Bodom.

I wish I had done more research before I bought my current T4R because now I really want one that's 4WD and not a bone-stock SR5 that came with wimpy tires.

I'm holding off on any mods for the time being and waiting until I graduate to start looking at a new 4x4 runner.
 
I honestly can't imagine having a 3RZ 2wd 4Runner. I'm not one of those to bash the 4Runner's speed. It's not meant to be fast, and to be honest mine does just fine at getting out of the way when I need it too. I've never really thought it was as underpowered as apprently everyone else does. That being said, if it was much slower I would probably start to get irritated with it. I dunno, I just can't see owning a 2wd SUV, but then some aren't into the offroad thing so my opinion is biased.

Go test drive a V6 4x4 and see what you think. It would be a pain to sell your 4Runner and pick up a v6 4x4 only to still be disappointed.
 
Where I live, I can't fathom getting a 2WD SUV. For me, I see it as a glorified station wagon, which is why Hyundai, Mazda and Ford annoy me. I want to get a brand new SUV, but in Canada, the Santa Fe, Tribute and Escape are only available in FWD if you opt for a manual transmission. I know in the US, the Santa Fe is available in 4WD even if you want a manual. That's why I keep searching for the 3rd gen 4Runner. If only there were more people like me, then Toyota might not have discontinued the manual. Oh well, time to hit the local classifieds again...haha.
 
When I bought my 3rd gen I knew it had to be a limited. I didn't even know they had a 4 cylinder but I knew the 3.0 v6 in my '90 was not enough engine for me. I would recommend selling it and getting more of what you want in factory options. Aftermarket stuff adds up too quickly and can also limit your market when you go to sell.
 
i know how you feel man, but all i could find at local dealers and on autotrader was 2WD. you live in cali so i'm sure you have a wider selection of vehicles to choose from. you might should get a 4th gen since they have V8s. you can get a bigger and more powerful ride!

Thats what I'd say too. For me I went from a 2006 v6 taco to my 00 T4R limited. The power difference was very noticeable but now I'm accustomed to it and it doesn't bother me. It's human nature to always want more though. I would figure out your needs first, do you want to wheel it? then 4x4 is needed, and the v6 would be a plus. But if the 4 banger does the job that you use the 4runner for then keep it, if you want the extra power and 4x4 just for kicks then do it if you can afford it and are not emotionally attached.

if i remember right he all ready has a sports sedan to go w/ the 4runner.

I thought about that, but there's too many things I don't like about the FJ Cruiser. I don't like rear mounted/tailgate mounted spare tires, I hate the outward visibility in the FJ Cruiser, and it's not practical for family use cause the rear seats are so hard to access. If only they put that transmission/engine combo into the 4Runner. If they did, I'd jump into a new 4Runner without hesitation.
