I do. $100

It was working fine, i retrofitted an E-locker in my 4runner so this is got to go.

I just took a look at you tag and it says that you have a locked rear end. Bad news. My diff is an open diff. Now is a good opportunity to re-gear in a ratio that you always wanted.

I am using a Lockright, I will just install it in yours. How much for shipping to 77450?

I have my old rear 4.10 ring gear. I would have to make sure it's not too rusty from sitting outside for a couple years, but you can have it for free if you want to go that route. If it is rusty, I live in CA so it won't be bad. It will be easier to get a whole 3rd, but I figured I'd extend the offer.

Yeah i did the same thing last saturday. v6 4x4. not going to tell you how. We'll just say alcohol was involved and leave it at that. First off, i have to say that the rear diff is crazy easy to pull. I just ordered a new ring and pinion set with a full install kit(bearings and races). Going to be looking at $320 total. What are your guys' thoughts on that? Did i pay too much??? Any tips on doing the disassembly and reassembly?

Thanks Brian! I appreciate it, but have already transferred Money to SingToe. He offered his old 3rd member assembled with 4.10 so.. hard to beat. Just need to swap my LockRight for his pinions and reinstall. If all goes well, will do it this weekend. Wish me luck! :D

Yeah, I could have gone that route but pussed out. I don't have the right equipment to preload the pinion and set the backlash.. much less remember how to. Local shop offered 90hr labor times 2 to do it for me but still.. add it up, I just couldn't swing it right now. We just got back from an Expensive Spring Break.. not to mention I just bought a new AC compressor/cutch + Injector + did the timing belt pulleys etc.. Starting to sound like a money pit, but I love it.

I still need to re-balance my Driveline on the Taco.. dragging it on rocks is BAD. :D

Man you'd be ecstatic about the savings you made if i told you I paid over $1000CA to have my 4.88's installed......oooppps was gonna save the reveal 'til later
shhh.gif
but anyhow..I figured I'd leave the install to the pros on this one.

yeah, I will do that one the next time I blow the Ring gear.. just can't swing the money right now. How big of an improvement was it over 4.10 ?

as we speak I'm still in the break-in process, I'll let you know as soon as I finish with it..and also mine came with 4.30's

Glad to help. I hope one day when i need cheap parts and the forum gods look upon me with help.

FYI - I wrapped the diff up in plastic and put it in 2 heavy duty boxes with a lot of Styrofoam. It will make it there nice and safe. It sucks that shipping is so expensive. 2/3 the cost of it.

it is what it is... Can you link me to your Writeup on the elocker install?

Recap

so to recap ... you were climbing and were in 2WD not 4-LO and the stress caused this break?

I didn't know that could happen so easily.

it was a very simple climb on Dirt basically.. the little dirt pebbles were like ball bearings, I had to floor it to get up it. I didn't know I was in 2wd.. I thought it was a little strange. It is the most likely scenario I can think of that snapped one of the teeth off.. I have really abused all kinds of ways, and right before that moment was the last time it didn't "pop"..
:happens:

I don't think this situation, i think the ring gear was fatigued or maybe the lock-right might have contaminated the diff oil with metal shavings or chips.

It would have broke going to Wal-mart, it just happens that you were wheeling and happened to be in 2wd.

Got the third yesterday (Thanks Singtoe), installed my lock-right in it last night. Installed it in the truck this morning, and already took it for a test drive. Everything works perfect and there is no noises! Thanks for the help guys.

on a side note.. Singtoe... Wrap that thing better before filing the box with foam.. I had a ton of white flakes inside the diff and had to pick them all out while it was apart. Clever Diaper packaging, works perfect! I guess Huggies is more absorbent after all! :D

Got mine back together two days ago. Ended up buying the Yukon gears. There was a few times in the disassembly and reassembly that i thought i was a bit over my head, but it all went back in right. total cost ended up being about 450 after paying a shop to break a few bearings loose and pressing on some new ones. As a side note, i can't believe how expensive gear oil is!
