dont worry, i didnt sell or trade my beloved 4runner. i just wanted to post saying a few things about the forums about corolla's. i find it interesting the pool of knowledge based on and around the 4runner compared to corolla's. i can find just about any write up on this site for maintenance, mods, general tips and guides about the 4runner. Corolla based forums are less knowledgeable.

there just seems to be less information out there for the corolla and i find that fascinating. i figured that if there was a forum for my 4runner with all this knowledge on it there would most likely be a similar equivalent out there for the corolla.

so i guess what i wanted to say is that i'm happy to be a 4runner owner and that its awesome to know that the limits of what can be done to my vehicle are limited by my abilities and the imaginations of others willing to forge a path and share their findings and knowledge with others. the people on this forum excel at sharing their past experiences and experiments. that makes me a huge fan of this site.

Congrats on the purchase. Great buy. Lets see...info on the corolla? Change the fluids, wash it and keep up with preventative maintenance. Oh and, drive the piss out of it!

Seriously though. I bought a 1998 Chevy prizm(aka corolla )two years ago for $500. Needed minimal body work and electrical work ( lights) It had 210k when i bought it. I drove it 80 miles a day, it burned oil like a mother****er but it ran and ran and ran. Never missed a beat.

My sister still drives it to this day with 287,000 miles on it. Only thing done since i had it was a few pulleys and belts along with fluids.
 
Mine is an 2004. it has 85k, black, tinted windows. its the S so it has the little "kit" on it with the fog lights, the alloy wheels and a sunroof. we bought it with my wife's commuting in mind. she was driving a 02 impreza rs and it was surprisingly terrible on gas, 24-25 on average. we kept it for the winters here but when with it getting nicer its nice to have something with better mileage. it gets amazing mileage. driven nicely by the wife and it has gotten around 40 consistently. i get around 33-36 cause i have a heavy foot lol. its an awesome little car, it reminds me a lot of a nicer version of the 97 tercel i once owned. i have already bought and installed a K&N filter and Ipod/MP3 Fm directed modulator for it. hand washed and waxed it last weekend. we plan on keeping this car around for a while.
 
The only forums I have seen as good as the 4Runner world is the older BMW world. (I had an e23 and youngest now has an e36). Those guys do everything, just as we do. They don't off-road, but then we don't race (mostly).

The first Toyota I ever bought was a 1980 Corolla. Bulletproof car. I didn't keep it very long because I moved to Brazil, but I sold it to a friend who ran it for 11 years before she killed it. Since then, two 4Runner/Surfs have kept me sold on Toyotas. If I ever need a small car, I might easily get another Corolla. But I'd keep the 4Runner.
 
congrats on the purchase... my wife has an 04 corolla that i inevitably inherited to take care of.. she wanted more pep so i put an aem cold air intake on it for the sound.. now she thinks it is going faster.. but i swear these things are indestructible.. long story short we were driving in a nasty rain storm.. decided to take a short cut and saw a puddle of water.. went through the puddle of water but it wasnt no puddle.. more like a lake!... car sucked up the water from the cold air intake and died.. the water was about to our shins in the car and we had to exit through the sunroof.. i called a buddy to help me push it out... as soon as we got out of it i tried starting it and it started right up.. got out.. looked at the exhaust tip and it looked like a water faucet... i expected it to die right away.. that was 4 years ago and not a single problem...like said before just pm and keep driving it!
 
My sister-in-law had one; it was great but did seems to burn more oil than usual. She went up one grade and it didn't lose any more. Something amiss with the VVT-i as my brother explained it to me that could be fixed by the dealership for $$$. Otherwise, belts, plugs, fluids, etc. and they were happy with it but sold it for an IS-250.

Also, from a detailer's point of view, the Corolla has hard paint.
 
When you want to "correct" the paint on an auto through polishing, compounding, or the like, it is good to know whether the paint is soft (thin layers) or hard (thick). Other than going by this chart and others, the only real way is to put some time in on a buffer using different products. With 90% of Toyotas receiving soft paint at the factory, it is unique to see the Corolla have hard paint. It should be better for the snow out there in IA.

They are little tanks. My brother in law has a 96' with like 230K on it. I can't picture him doing any maintenance at all on it but the little thing runs it's ass off.

My first brand-new car was a '75 Corolla with a 1.6L engine and a four-speed. I outfitted it with a 2.5" exhaust system, a vented airbox, and Pirelli radials. I paid $3,200 for that car, drove it hard for 6 years and sold it for $1,500. It was a really fun bit of practical transport. I wouldn't mind another one.
 
I agree with the OP. This is the most helpful and for the most part friendly forum out there. I joined another forum a few years ago when I got my subaru and over there it seems like if you don't have a turbo you're not worth talking to. T4R.org is much better!
