I burned up my 1st Gen 4Runner Yesterday

I blew up my '89 4runner yesterday. Let her run out of oil and overheated her. Blew a valve they tell me. Had it since I turned 16 in 1990 = 21 years. I feel like a complete *********. Took care of it for all those years, then the oil leak got worse and I thought I could make it to work another day before adding more oil. Dead wrong. Very depressing.

Frankly the car was kind of falling apart but I never thought it would quit running. It was my only car and way to get to work. I can't believe I allowed this happen. It is just a car but irreplaceable. Not sure what to do with it now.

Anyone ever been through this? I feel horrible.

Time to rebuild your motor and build up a n/a 22re. I put a engnbldr rebuild kit in mine along with a street rv head, 268 cam, bored .03 over and a lce header. I love it, it's no race car but it's got a little pep to it.

These are fun trucks, don't scrap it. BUILD IT!!

How much should I budget for a project like that? Money is a major concern but I do not want to scrap it.

I originally had a 22rte motor, when my rod bearing spun I tossed all the turbo stuff and went n/a.

I found a good small block on craigslist for $50

Small block $50
Rebuild kit w/ 268 cam $300
Street RV Head $450
Machine work (bore .03 over, hot tank, deck the block, chase all threads, recond the connecting rods) $500
new crank (was cheaper than machining mine) $150
LCE Header $400
non turbo afm $50
new vacuum lines and rad lines $35
Misc fluids, filter, paint, and other misc stuff $200

Total $2135. I may be forgetting something here or there but it was worth every penny. I now have a motor that will pull my lifted 4runner on 33's up a hill without any problem and still get great gas mileage. Right now I'm getting about 18mpg with 650 miles on the motor. I'm thinking once it is fully broken in I will probably get about 19-20 mpg's. Well worth it!
 
I wouldn't rebuild that one. You probable did more damage than you realize. Id look for a replacement motor on CL. Or you can buy a new one for 1500-3 grandish.

You'll regret it if you don;t! I'm in the same boat, but it's transmission, entire braking system and a BUNCH of other worn down parts. Those are causing me enough grief, I can just imagine what an engine might be like.

I agree with Hyde802, you probably did more damage than you realize. I've heard LCE makes nice kits, but I haven't done all that much research.

I didn't look where you're from before I hit reply, but, where I'm from (Calgary, Alberta, Canada), there's a toyota graveyard a few hours away who has helped me out tons in the past. I could further you with more information, if you think you want to research into it (you're probably south of the border, and shipping would be an issue)..


... a 5mge(t) or a 7mge(t) will bolt right up to your W series tranny (Don't quote me 100%, but I'm fairly certain. a 7 would give you considerable more pep than a 22re, BUT, swapping in an inline 6 would open up a whole new can of worms, and might require a firewall "reshaping" and your engine bay to go on weight watchers- relocating everything necessary.

Sorry to hear that. The 22r is a very popular engine and parts are plentiful if you can't afford to fix it, someone will want to buy it from you for more than you think.
 
A local Toyota engine-only rebuilder in my area told me $1,500 for a "re-furbished" V6 with a 3-year warranty or $1,700 for a "re-manufactured" V6 with a 2-year warranty.
 
Thank you for all the feedback. I towed her to my driveway last weekend and my heart sinks a little every time I come home and see it just sitting there. My old boss loaned me his "extra" Mercedes for a month until I figure out what is next: Nice gesture on his part but damn do I feel like a douchebag driving that thing. A rebuild is not looking good as it was my primary vehicle and was also having other problems - I need something reliable to get to work and back every day and obviously I am not the best one to keep her running.

I hate to scrap her. Anyone have a recommendation on how to sell it to someone who will rebuild it - eBay, Craigslist, Autotrader, this website???
 
Time to sell my '89 4runner

Any advice on how to sell to someone who will rebuild it? I posted it on Craig's List yesterday and have received a ton of responses = all want to scrap it.
 
tell you what i have a good 22re with 170k on it. you pay the shipping plus 50$ for the pallet and straps and ill send it to you if you really want to keep your truck. i would buy it but for me to have a hole truck shipped here on a flat bed would be to expensive.
