You don't need the solid axle unless you're really wheeling hard, and you'll pay a premium for it. The IFS is enough for most 6-7 trails, and will give you a much better pavement/dirt road experience. But yeah, if you're looking for an older truck, the 1st and 2nd gen rigs are mechanically identical, and the 1st gen has the superior body in my opinion (soft tops rule!). Either way, go for the 22re, unless you're planning a 3.4 swap.

You might find a broader range of opinions if you open a thread about a 2nd gen in the 2nd gen forum...

I have 1990 Toyota pickup that I bought new in in 1990 and I still own it. With 330,000 miles on it, I still would drive it anywhere.

I got a recall from Toyota telling me about the head gasket around 1992 or 1993 saying the will replacement for free.
They replace it and I have never had any issues with the head gasket in the last 20 years.

In my opinion, the 3VZE is a damn good motor.

The 3.0 is one of the most underrated Toyota motor. Its not as bad as people make it out to be ... but I'd do a 22re strictly because its extremely simple to work on and diagnose. Not to mention parts are cheap and its a workhorse !

I prefer the 1st Gen and 22re also but really, there's nothing wrong with buying a 2nd Gen with a 3VZE either. Either of these would make a fun trail beater for not a lot of money.

Yeah it's gotten a bad name, but it also sucks power wise and gets horrible gas mileage. Between the two it was a deal breaker for me. Granted I had an auto, which is not the best for the 3.0.

I have a '92 and my dad had the heads replaced under recall but never has had any trouble, its a damn good truck. But we had a '95 4runner that blew heads three times before we sold it, loved the vehicle though.
