I can't keep up anymore

with what is "in style" - - - -

Back when I was first hanging out on Land Rover forums (starting around 2000) it seemed it was all about lifting trucks; putting on bigger tires; changing all the chrome to black (even though at the time there was very little chrome on most LRs), getting the wheels powder coated black; adding big expedition type racks; putting extra lights up on the racks; etc-----

Then about 2005 it started changing to adding chrome on the grills; adding sexier wheels and black wheels and grills were out - Then around 2010 all the LRs really started getting blinged out: uber blinged, more like drug dealer cruisers and the prices going through the roof.......

Then this afternoon looking at Ford, Dodge and Chevy pickups on the adds on TV: 20 inch chrome wheels; massive chrome bumpers; really massive chrome grills - Ford seems to be the most over the top in this regard......

Then coming back to this site I see all of the above - :drummer::drummer:

I guess I'll just never understand or catch up - - -

I think whatever is in style is just up to you. I say if you like it on your truck that is all that matters.

Personally, I've never been a fan of chrome or bling. I mean, the older generation trucks with chrome or steel bumpers didn't bother me but wheels and accents have always made me cringe. I also have a rigid frame '86 harley xlh and tried to limit the amount of shiny bits I put on.

I will never understand the black wheels that are also machined. The contrast of black and crazy bright aluminum doesn't appeal to me. I realize I'm in the minority, as this is common for aftermarket wheels as well as wheels on many new cars.

I think this applies to pretty much everything. Remember when iPhones only came in Black? Then White was the big thing, then Gold. I think the Xbox was the worst. 360 was white, then the special black editions came out, then the slims came out in black with white being the special edition.

Cadillac was pretty bad for a while too, and probably still is. My dad had an Escalade EXT, black loaded and it had Chrome everywhere with all the special packages. Then a few years later he traded in for a regular Escalade and got a White Platinum which cost extra to have all of the STANDARD Chrome trim come in color matched pieces. By then chrome was the norm so they started making color match the "Premium" option.

All just comes down to marketing and getting the most $$$$$ out of everyone by forcing styles to change. Just like clothing styles, it's all cyclical.

I thought about getting rid of the chrome on my 99 but the chrome on red is growing on me. Styles and fads comes and goes, other people trucks/cars never really bother me. I am not the one driving it.

Chevy truck buyers tend to be older school fellas who think that chrome is an "upgrade" and means it must be fancy like those 50's cars.

Ive liked the blacked out look on cars for as long as I can remember, can't stand chrome. With that said, do what you like, who cares what everyone else is doing.

Blacked out grilles were huge in the '70s. Everything is cyclical - all it takes is the mainstream latching on to something custom. IMO, once a look is offered as a factory option, it's officially a dated look - ie, the blacked out pickups you can get from Chevy and Dodge now.

I think someone should paint their 5th gen grille and roof white, like the old FJs, haha.

And white flat spoked wheels! No where to put the visible gun rack though.
