I killed two engines in 6 months!


I have a 93 4Runner with a 22r motor.... the first one I roasted trying to limp it to my mechanics and the second one I killed six months later by spiting a piston...

I'm now looking at putting in a 3rd engine as I can't afford to buy another car.


What Engines are truly compatible with a '93 5sp manual 4x2 trans?

Truly compatible? Anything 22r or 22re will work just fine, it is what it is supposed to have.
Have these engines been used or new?

I had the same luck with my 83 pickup 4x4. original engine died, used one 6 months later. either buy a new one or rebuild a used one. i did this and the truck has run another 6 years without a problem

How in the world did you kill 2 that fast? Lol. Which transmission do you have? You can do the 3.4 swap more than likely.

You're in Germany? What I hear from US guys who've served over there is that your equivalent of our Department of Motor Vehicles is very strict. I'd be willing to bet that if you try and do anything but the exact motor your truck was built with, that you drown in red tape. If you're considering any sort of motor swap, I'd invest lots and lots of time in research into the legalities of that in your country.

As noted above, much better to rebuild yours (time) or have it professionally rebuilt (money). Swapping a used engine into the truck is always a gamble, depending on how it was treated in it's previous life.

Well I have spent $1400 on two motors this month. First one had a bad piston second one ran great but idled rough. Did compression test and one cylinder has no compression.

If he is indeed in the military stationed in Germany then he has to pass a safety inspection, motor swaps are not even looked at. Oil leaks, cancerous rust, warning lights, and steering is the main things checked. I put a 6" lift and 35's on my TJ while stationed in Germany. I passed just fine. The hardest thing is finding toyota parts in Germany.

The only engines truly compatible would be a 22R (carbed) or 22RE (EFI).

I don't know what putting holes in a Porsche skid plate has to do with anything.

OP. if your really set on an engine swap I think the easiest that you could do and use your trans would be a 3rz. Bellhousing swap and engine install and wiring. Then your good to go. Really though the easiest would be a good solid rebuild of your 22re as others have stated.

I'm Actually in Australia! Victoria to be specific.... this has made finding new engines a little tricky.

I had a friend recommend a "SHORT BLOCK" because the piston only broke through the side of the block.... but they are not made/shipped to Australia.

I'm kinda also looking at options that may be a little left field but still go "Oh you can actually fit a (imagine a big Chev block something) and it'll bolt right onto the transmission!"
