I have a 2000 4Runner 4x4. I just bought this car a month ago, I replaced the fuel sending unit and re calibrated the fuel Gage. The fuel light came on and about 10 miles later it felt like it was running out of gas. I pulled into a gas station and it took 15.5 gallons. The tank is 18.5 gallons what happened to my other 3 gallons.

The fill tube/tank design is poor. If you are actually out of gas, you can get the full 18ish gallons in...but it will take a long time. The fuel will back up the fill tube and shut the pump off. So for 2-3 gallons, you'll basically be trying to top it off. It's not worth messing with.
I usually put 14 in mine. That's usually around 200-220 miles on the tank.

Sure you weren't filling gas into the necks spill tube... isn't that bad, i thought over filling it flooded some sort of charcoal canister or something... i could be wrong but i always stopped filling after the first click because of this.
I think by going slowly with the gas you avoid the back pressure needed to give you those first few clicks so your first click is more like the 3rd or 4th....

If I don't stuff mine with at least another gallon or so after the first click of the pump, my gas gauge will be off the full line in 10 mi. or less. I need to recalibrate the gauge but have my doubts about whether or not this will fix it. It really irritates me to have my low fuel light come usually right at 212 miles. I have 5.29's and 34's so that number is actually a little low, but at that point I usually still only get 14-15 gal in there depending on how much in town driving I've been doing which I do a lot of.
