I don't like the low gas tank...Looks like a Pathfinder tank would work

Hi,

I was just comparing my 96 Limited to me 94 Pathfinder and it seems that the Pathfinder tank may fit where the spare tire is located.

The tank is about 11" from the floor of the Pathy to the skid plate, which is a couple inches less than the spare tire, and the tank is 21" from front to back, again much less than the tire. The tank would end at the tow hook on the frame.

The cross member and the spare tire mechanism would have to be cut out, but now there would be room to raise up the hitch and have the receiver come through the rusted bumper - until a proper bumper can be fabricated - and this would replace any strength that the spare tire cross member was providing.

Why all of the fuss? I am used to my 1980 Toyota short box which was nearly impossible to drag the undercarriage with only a small lift and 31's, so I am looking at ways to improve the 4Runner, in addition to a suspension lift.

Any thoughts? Has anyone tried this? Is this a stupid idea?

I was thinking about a CBI bumper which make you move your spare.
so yeah open space, I was thinking either fuel or water for traveling.

just far down on the list but I am curious if it can be done. (why not)

with upgraded suspension it should hold the extra weight.

will be watching what this thread brings.

That is definitely protected!

Do you know what year of F 150 would fit?

The reason I am concerned is that there is tight access to a number of local lakes and good places to hunt - though I have only had the 4Runner for a couple of months, I know I will not get in to those places, so I have the Summer to put in a lift and possibly relocate the tank.

I have thought of a small body lift so I can move the tank up to the new body position (I have a BL kicking around here somewhere that I could cut down) but heard somewhere that the 96 has less cab mounts than the later years, and it was therefore not recommended to use a BL.

Thoughts?
