I took the 4r out on a road trip yesterday. Went to the Titans game in Nashville, I left from here in Memphis, only 200mile trip one way. It was the 1st time I took it out of town since I bought it. For a v6 2wd with 106,000 miles and 4 grown adults with coolers, it drove like smooth an like a dream. It was even winding with strong head wind with those semi trucks. But the v6 just keeped on booking. (for the people asking/concerned about gas milage 21.7 on average between 70-80mph) I hear some folks complain about the comfort of the seats and road trips, I didn't have any complaints and I'm 6'4", my passengers didn't complain either :trophy:

my lie o meter says 23 mpg at 70 mph 03 v6 sr5. calculated is 19.5-20.5 this is with no passengers
 
That's a hell of a drive to see the Titans this year. I live 30 minutes from the stadium and wouldn't go this year if it was free. They're pathetic.

Good to hear the 4runner did well.
 
I agree with TN.

I moved recently so I've been commuting further to and from work with the 4Runner. It's an urban commute but there're a lot of curves and hills and mixed with some congestion Next April will be four years with this SR5 and I gotta say, despite the frustrating HVAC controls and floor mounted parking brake, this is the best vehicle I've ever owned and driven for the money. Quiet, versitile, planted in corners, 2WD/AWD/4WD. I'd encourage other V6 owners to run 91 octane and a high-flow drop-in filter as it noticeably wakes the V6 up. Easily chirps the tires off the line and lots of mid-range power.

I agree they suck this year..but with free tickets we had nothing to lose and only gain a drinking buzz..lol

I do run 91 octane, IMO it runs better, smoother feeling and sounds better. I did put 87 octane in, it didn't like it. Engine felt kinda ruff like on start ups and a bit sluggish on accerlation.

I have always used premium and have done numerous studies in numerous vehicles and the reality of it is. . .for about the difference of $4 a tank I can put better gas in my vehicle and usually in my sedan can average an extra 60-70 extra miles out of a tank of premium as compared to lower octane gas. In an SUV the mileage per tank isn't as significant, but it definitely makes the engine run smoother. Also I have found out that in my 4runner if I subtract 1.8 from the lie-o-meter I get exactly what I hand calculate for mpg. Just my 2 cents.
 
Only difference between 91 and 87 would be if your engine knocks. Virtually no benefit to going to 91, unless you are knocking with 87.
 
This is something that is debated over in numerous forums and has been for years, but I guess what it comes down to is if I can avoid the engine knock all together instead of waiting for it to occur I'm going to spend an extra 15-20 cents a gallon. To each his own.
 
Another Memphis 4runner around...

The gas mileage stays pretty good as long as you have stock tires on it... My brother has his down to about 16MPG now!

I have never had a knock, I also don't know what grade of gas was used before I got the 4r. I read the owners manual when I bought it as it states "for better performance 91 octane recommended". I'm sure 87 is fine. I put 91 in the winter and will put 89 in summer, depends on price. It probably all comes down to when they switch from summer to winter grades, temperture outside, humidity, altitude, barometeric pressure, uphill, downhill and driving style in general :lookout:

Yep another in Memphis, I see quite few 4r here in the city. Very popular here. I wanted a 4wd but didn't like what I saw for sell here at the time. So I got a nice clean 2wd low milage for my daily driver. I'll get the Audi with quattro out the garage for snow and ice if needed.

My experience: costs more, but burns less, so the overall cost isn't as much. Three more hp and 12 lb./ft. torque with 91. Godferbid we light up the V6/V8 debate again. The horror. Okay, I'll leave this alone and stay on topic that 4th gen. 4Runner is a great truck. Rained all day today. Put it in AWD mode and it picked its way through traffic like a petty thief. Really strong brakes as well.

For 2009:

Tacoma, 4Runner and even the Tundra for the 1GR-FE: 236 hp, 266 ft./lbs. torque, 87 octane.

FJ Cruiser, for the 1GR-FE: 239 hp, 278 ft./lbs. torque, 91 octane (or premium), recomended, but not required.

I'm just going by what Toyota published and what the automotive media have re-published and what's been discussed to death in numerous bulletin boards. Wikipedia it, don't take my word for it. Mod the wikipedia if you think it's inaccurate.
