I Hate Chrome

not to long ago i purchased new chrome bumpers for my 4runner to replace the old rotted ones that came with it. now, they are starting to rust again. i noticed that some tiny spots had bubbled up and started to peel. i tried very hard to try and protect these newbumpers but new England winters and salty roads suck. i am going to attempt to paint these myself when the weather gets warmer. any tips i should follow? Ive done my basic research on how to do it but just wanted to run it by you guys just in case you know something i dont.

i got them at a small performane shop over a year ago. i probobly should go back to see what they say but i just wanna get rid of the chrome in general. should of bought the black base bumpers instead. :bash:

:nono: DON'T PAINT IT!!! I just made that mistake last month. Take it somewhere and have it powder coated. Then primer it and paint it, or if your runners black you dont need to paint it.

I live in RI and have the same problem with the chrome bumpers as does everyone else I know that has them. I bought after market replacement and it has started to rust out within 5 months. they factory ones will last about 8-10 years they are chromed dipped 3 times and pretreated the metal before it gets chromed. I would suggest buying factory again and sand down the back and brush on some POR15 this stuff is amazing!! my friends have used it with great results. I am goning to do this in the spring after the salt on the roads is gone. don't get any on you, it will not come off!!! no joke it will take days if not a week or more! I think toyota of providence can get you the back three sections for 300 give or take. :

i was thinking about having a body shop do it but since i lost my job, money is tight. i have thought about getting it rhino lined but dont really have a picture of what it looks like. i did take precautionary steps before i had put them on. i got some rustoleum spray paint and painted the inside of the bumpers. i did a few coats and after it dried, i applied some 3M rubberized undercoating on them to really protect them. from the looks of it, i think tiny little rocks getting kicked up by my tires might have chipped the chrome and eventually started the rust. i live on a farm and have a dirt drive way so guess that could be it. the chrome peels off like tin foil once you can get to it. cheap aftermarket bumpers, o well. but right know i do wanna get rid of the chrome, but haven't decided what i'm gonna do now. paint or rhino-line, what do you guys think?

I'm never getting rid of my 4runner! you'll have to pry it from my cold dead hands , even then, good luck!. does rhino lining come just in black or is it available in different colors?

I'm pretty sure it comes in different colors. You might even be able to make it the color you want.

Before you get too attatched to it I would make sure somewhere around you does it.

isn't herculiner, rhino-liner, and line-x all the same thing? if i do rhino-line it, dont they sell that stuff at like Lowe's or home depot? either way, ill attempt to do the bumpers myself.

I don't see what the issues is with painting them yourself.

I did and by damn they look good.

I do need to redo them do to the fact that the rear end was in an accident, and the entire front of the truck got pelted with rocks from a big rig which requires me to also get new head lights....

Gonna make a couple of suggestions.
I will be doing this my second time around.

Sand them down really good, like i mean make those bumpers cloudy.
if your going to use a power sander, use an orbital one and not a belt one and still be light, because the bumpers on these trucks are thin...

Also go from rough to fine, i don't know what grain to suggest cause honestly i don't know what i will be using myself, but i figure you want them to look as smooth as possible when you paint them.

Next DO NOT primer, that was a big mistake on my part.
The rustoleum is meant to go right on the bare metal.
I only primered the outside of the bumpers and then just painted the inside, and honestly the inside looks better.

and do a few coats, three should do it.

as for the clear coat, pack it on, I only did 2 cause i was in a rush to get my daily driver back on the road.
I would do 4 or 5.

then you are good to go

I'm glad I live in california. No salted roads here. Just red gravel. It dosent work nearly as goo but hey... No rusting problems.
