I hate windy days

I love my 4runner but hate it when it's windy, especially on the highway.

I live in Vancouver Canada so we don't extremely windy condition. I'm talking about wind gust of about 50 to 80 km/hr, so about 30 -50 mph winds. It's such an uneasy feeling

Was slightly windy today in South Florida, I could feel it when I was driving on an overpass on the highway.....I hate the wind, especially with a trailer on the back!!! Had that happen a few weeks ago when I was pulling it down....no fun.

I used to get annoyed by wind blowing my 4runner but I just drove my in-laws Tahoe from Denver to pueblo and now my runner feels solid as a rock. This trip was only 20-30mph gusts and that truck was all over the road.

I think the 4R is pretty solid even with the wind, however it has some serious wind noise issues as well, but I still love it! Just drove a Ford Edge (i think) it was weirdly quiet.

Driving home from Pittsburgh Friday my 4R was all over the road, it was certainly a two hands on the wheel drive. Worst part was driving into the wind the entire was home, mileage was way off...

I don't really mind changing lanes, but I sure like to know ahead of time when I'm going to.

Are your cross bars set at the "suggested" position to minimize wind noise? I don't really mind taking my 4Runner out in the wind. It doesn't budge that much. If you wanna have an adventure, take out a GX470- now that isn't fun!

thanks for the pics. the sport edition has no such markings. i will consider removing the cross-members completely. does anyone know how they come off? i have tried loosening the knobs but they dont just "come off" the tracks.

Honestly, comparing my 4Runner to my old '93 S10 Blazer it is far more stout and stable on the freeway in general and even in windy conditions. My blazer used to get tossed everywhere the wind hit and nearly threw me off the road a few times. With the 4Runner you can feel the wind pushing you, but it is much more controllable and stable in comparision.

Just experienced this on Friday driving from north Ga to central Ga. I slowed, put it in 4H got back to speed and it seemed to feel more stable to me after. Didn't have to fight with the wheel as much the rest of the trip. Dunno if it helps anything or just uses more gas.

As I recall, you have to remove the end caps and maybe the mounting brackets too, from either the front or the back in order to slide out the crossmembers.

I don't think removing them will help a whole lot. I've taken off the cross-members and the entire rack before, and really didn't notice much difference except when I put the cross-members back in backwards-- that was much noisier! All in all, they're not that bad and I just didn't feel that the slightly reduced noise of not having the rack or the cross-members did not outweight the benefits of being able to use the rack on occasion.

On the sport edition, look at the inside of the rails. My UrbanRunner has the same rails and it has two small dimples on the inside of each rail. I moved mine to those dots and it had less wind noise on my drive home yesterday..

I feel safe and confident driving my 4runner in the wind. My daily driver on the other hand, not really. Its a 96 Saturn, and the wind throws it around like crazy!

Mine used to be very nervous in crosswinds, but ever since I put these big wheels and tires on it, it's steady as anything I've ever driven.

You guys with wheel spacers... Did you notice an improvement in the wind after spacers?

Coming from a lowered Honda Accord, the wind has been a big adjustment for me. The first time I drove the Runner on the interstate with 20+mph gusts I felt like I was everywhere.

It's extremely windy here today, not sure if you've heard about the tornadoes and wind damage that's happening here in the Midwest. Anyways, driving in today, I did notice a huge difference with the way it handled. I had new tires and spacers put on last fall. It didn't feel like I was knocked around as much, even when reaching speeds of 70mph.
