I Have 5000# hitch.....can it be changed out for newer hitch?

Howdy,

I have a 2003 4R with the early hitch. I have read the other posts and am still not clear on whether the newer hitch can be swapped in or whether there is an aftermarket hitch that I can have installed to up my towing capacity a touch?

So for clarity:

1. Can the old hitch be replaced with the newer hitch? Botl on or weld on?

2. Can the old style hitch be replaced with an aftermarket hitch?

yes and yes.

i've heard that it's a pita doing it yourself and it's better off spending the 150 or so on having the dealer do the install.

not sure if there are any aftermarket hitch but you can look.

As was previously answered, yes to both questions. Just remember, you can install a higher rated hitch, but Toyota rates the maximum towing capacity according to the engine. If you have the V6 (rated at 5k) and you install the V8 (rated at 7k) hitch, it doesn't increase the recommended towing capacity of the V6. Of course, how much you attempt to tow is your decision, good or bad.
