I will be buying new front and rear bumpers, sliders, lift , and wheels/tires :wow2:

I have been making a list of items/prices etc. and I am down to the wheels/tires.

I cannot make up my mind.:bash:

I will be going with 285/75/16 mud tires

I THINK I have decided on These wheels; Mickey Thompson

However, I am unsure as to what back spacing to use. ( I assume these will work on our Toyota's, the whole hub vs. lug centric thing)
I see several different measurements of backspacing available.

I will be doing a 3" lift (toytec or OME most likely) plus a body lift.


So, oh great off road gurus, What backspacing do I need with 285/75/16 tires?
Am I correct that the 4-7/16 isn't too much towards the truck?
Is the 3-5/8 going to stick out too far? (I have Limited flairs)
(My GUESS is the 3-5/8 is the answer)
Your input is welcome.

BTW....is there a good online place to get wheels/tires together? I have found 4 wheel Customs, but I haven't really searched.

I'd get them with the 4" back spacing. Those will stick out 1/2" further than the stocks do now. With the tires on there, you will be close, if not just past the fender flares. You don't want too much or debris starts flying back and tearing up your paint.

Sometimes tire shops will throw a discount on whole packages, just call around and ask.

I say the wider the better as you make your truck taller its advised to push your tires out a bit more for a lower center of gravity. i have an 8" rim with 305/70/16's 4.25 BS and i wish i had more like 3.5" BS I vote these

you can also look at black rock rims as they do custom backspacing orders direct from the warehouse located in Southern california

On the link you provided, the 4" BS is right under the 4 7/16" BS. But I just noticed they are for an 8 lug.
If that is the case, I'd go with the 3 5/8" just so the wheels will stick out a little more. You may be able to find wheels that have a similar look with more BS though...
With the 3 5/8" BS, you're already going to stick out 1" further than stock...add in the 1" in wheel size,, and you'll be 2" more than stock...may be too much.

I THINK 4XInnovations front bumper + sliders and Perkins Performance Rear Bumper with the tire carrier.

Like I said It is a hard decision, but the Perkins pumper is a good looking bumper and is the least expensive I have found w/ tire carrier.

its my first time seeing this bumper... and i've searched for a while. i like the design but would like it better if the tire was on the other side to help even out the weight of the gas tank. how much is it? how come the prices aren't on the site?

I had to call them and talked to the owner. Their website is outdated, and he knows it. I will have to wait until I get hope to post up the price, but it was a GOOD price. I am ASSUMING you can have him put the tire on either side...that is my plan as I agree with you that it should be on the passenger side.

Did you see the post by steezmcqueen on bumpers?(I assume you have) There is a similar one over on YodaTech. I am not sure which one has it, but I found it listed somewhere. Anyway, the few people who have them talk good things about the company. Seemed like a nice guy on the phone.

Ok, question for you all. I've seen several references to "sliders". I'm not familiar with Sliders, is it the same as the "nerf bars".

Sliders are meant to slide on and pivot off rocks. Usually built with .120" wall tube that won't bend. They're excellent for offroading with any tight areas with rocks or trees. Usually welded to frame.

I'd get the wheels with less backspace especially if you have limited flares. You'll probably need to do some pinch weld pounding and a bit of inner fender bending to fit the tires if you're offroadingoffroading

Ok, so after checking my notes The Perkins rear bumper + tire carrier + Powder Coating is $1000. :boink: That is cheap IMHO. This was according to a phone call I had with them on Tuesday I believe. Shipping will be extra of course.

So I have been mulling over tire choices and just when I think I know what I want I see a cooler looking tire, or read a bad review or change my mind.:redbrick:

I have read about a few people who, after going with a 285/75/16, complain of losing several MPG (3 or 4) due to the larger tires. I have also read about a few people who claim not to lose any or gain 1 mpg with the 255/85/16 tire.

Is there truth in this? Will I lose 2-3-4 MPG going from 265/75/16 to 285/75/16?

I am just soooo tired of reading about tires right now:gun4:

Perkins makes a great product! Wish I had a little more cash when I ordered mine to get the tire carrier but hopefully I can find a shop to fab one up for me.

With just 285s you may or may not lose 3-4mpgs, depends a lot in your driving style. But add in all the extra weight from wheels/tires, and both front and rear steel bumpers, you will definitely lose some mpgs...that's just the price to pay for going all out.

I'm not saying you won't lose a mpg or 2 but do you know how the ppl that claim to be losing 4mpg are calculating this info? If they are using their tripometer then the math is flawed.

I used to have 285s on my rig and only lost 1-2mpgs if that depending on how I drove on that particular tank.

I really like that bumper. Looks awesome--plus, for $1000, plus the fact you don't need the OEM plastic gear on top of it, it's a steal.

I have a scangauge, and it is jacked up as far as MPG...I have reset it, reprogrammed it, ETC and it shows like 3 MPG all the time ....I think I need to send it in or call the company. I only use it for tranny temps......
