I have never changed my oil filters

Well I have no doubt that my oil filter will look like shit but will this affect the longevity of the engine? I believe the air and fuel filter good to change but they only require changes every 20,000 to 40,000 miles

Yes it will. You are recirculating contaminants and other particles that the oil filter picks up. When your filter clogs it gets bypassed therefore it is essentially like not having an oil filter at all.

Changing an oil filter regularly is such a no-brainer that anyone who advises against it is either a troll, or has absolutely no understanding of how an internal combustion engine works. It is important to have clean air and fuel coming in for the combustion process, clean oil to lubricate the moving parts, and clean coolant to keep the engine temps down and your cooling system in proper working order.

You are not gong to make this guy understand that he is being ignorant, in his mind, all the garbage that finds its way into your engine (that the filter catches as proven by the pictures above) is of no consequence to your valves, valve guides, oil pickup, oil returns, cam, or crank....

he is like the kid in class that got a question wrong on the test and swears everyone else in class is wrong and only he is right.

OP... Someone lied to you, they told you you don't need a filter, perhaps your grandfather, or father, but in the end, the filter is insurance to help insure your engine stays as trouble free for as long as possible. If you are okay knowing the filter looks like a wet dog turd and you have more particulates floating in your oil than anyone else...fine. It will cost you in the end, and since you have no way to quantify if what you are doing is helping or hurting because your sample is a single biased opinion based on a vehicle (or two) that has not been torn down and inspected compered to a filtered engine, you have no valid leg to stand on, you are simply stirring the pot.....that my friend is called trolling.

do us all a favor and remove your fuel and air filter also, then report back to us when with real data and photos of your finding on the "filtering scam".

Based on this type of logic....There are plenty of people who smoked in this world who never contracted Cancer or Heart problems.

Yet there's THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of documents PROVING that smoking causes cancer and Heart problems.

So ONE person who smoked for 50 years doesn't get cancer or any heart problems...concludes that smoking is NOT bad for you.

Ha i dont know about you guys but i change my filters just like i change my underwear, but not at 3k miles....:biggrin2:

I like these analogies, they're definitely reinforcing the explanation.

I'll add one. Think of the oil filter as the liver in your body. It cleans the blood (oil) in your circulatory system as the heart (oil pump) pumps it throughout the body (4Runner engine). You wouldn't want to see what happens if you didn't have a properly functioning liver, I can tell you first hand it's not fun.

People like the OP are the reason buying a used vehicle is such a crapshoot.

That's a bit of an apples to oranges comparison. My great grandfather smoked 2 packs a day until he died in his late 80's. He died from a fall that put him in the hospital where he contracted an infection. Conversely, there are plenty of people who never smoked and had a good diet who had heart failure or lung cancer. Correlation does not always imply causation.

I would like to see a few document cases of engine failure becuase of not changing the filter. That would be nice. I was think of changing the filter on my Ranger since it has more miles than my 4runner and cutting it open. I know for sure the 4runner has at least 50k on its current filter. Now my Ranger has 120k on its filter ( I bought her with 100k ). I think I can do on Friday.

how many times has that engine been rebuilt on your father's 1995 Chevy with 520,000 miles on it? Let us all take an educated guess, it's all original.....right?

i was just thinking this!! apparently all our point wont get thru to him.... I have worked on hydraulics and seen what happens to dirty filters and to cylinders. On equipment that is high dollar and lots of guys working around them.

My dad would just buy another truck if the engine gave out. The body on the Chevy looks bad and inside it's even worse. He only uses Quaker State 10w40, that is his oil. He has gone through 3 starters, 1 clutch, 1 driver shaft and u joints. the trany is hard to shift, but the enigne runs great. The a/c still works.

Next time you change a filter cut it open with a can opener, then carefully unroll the pleated paper material, run a magnet over it and you will be surprised what gets picked up, a close inspection of the paper under a strong light and a hand held magnifying glass will also show wear particles. Filters do work!

A can opener? My wife wouldn't like that to much. I have some tin snips, it will look ugly but it will get the job done.

Again that's convoluted logic. ONE case of correlation does not imply causation...BUT MILLIONS DO. There's so much overwhelming evidence it's IMPOSSIBLE to ignore.

Probably can't get enough stupid people to try it.

We need a new forum called Maintenance Shaming.

The OP simply passed on a piece of information about what he does and advised no one else to do the same, but you'd never know it by some of the responses. Call it an experiment, though not one I'm willing to conduct.

It appears the worst effect of no filter change, for some, is the fear of being hypnotically compelled to follow the same practice by simply hearing about it.

Forget about oil filter changing. I just wasted 15 min of my life which I read every posts on this thread. :redbrick:
At work, on company time and computer which I might get fired.

Amusing thread but I have a similar story to the OP's. One of my brothers is pretty incompetent when it comes to anything more complex than walking on two legs. I happened to be at his house when a guy came to look at an old Corolla he was selling with 250K miles on it. They potential buyer made the comment that he must change the oil frequently to get that many miles without any problems. My brothers reply (100% honest) was "When it gets low I add a quart if that's what you mean, are you supposed to change all of it?" After the guy left w/o buying my brother asked me if people really changed their oil. He was serious.

My parents insisted we were from the same gene pool but to this day I don't believe them.

It's not convoluted logic. Merely an observation that smoking does not always cause cancer, like not smoking does not always prevent it. Therefore my apples to oranges comment. It has nothing to do with the topic at hand.
