The reason you won't find any documented engine failures due to not changing the filter is because it's probably a slow process. Gradually, all the crap that the filter would usually pick up is wearing down the internals of your engine little by little until something gives out. When that happens, most people would probably assume that the engine died just because it has however many miles on it. I'm sure nobody would assume anyone is that dumb to just not change the filter.

I'd be very interested to see what the inside looks like if you do get around to cutting open that 50k mile filter. Please post pictures (good or bad), so the few of us that actually care can see and learn

My guess is,the kind if people who don't change the filter are not the kind of people to have an engine analyzed after it fails.
Debris get in the oil, carbon builds up in the oil, tiny metal particles are suspended in the oil and oil sludges with heat, commons sense tells you filtering oil is a good thing.
Not changing your filter because you "think" you should not have to is nonsense and your absence of common sense is baffling everyone who has read this.

Anyway, This borderline related: My neighbor has a 98 12v Cummins that has an oil leak on the timing cover. Being that it is located at the front of the engine, air has blown the oil all over the engine compartment and front drivetrain. So much so, that if you look at it, you can't help but laugh. There is honestly at least 1/4" to 1/2" of sludge coating everything. This is what's cool, everything that he has had to work on/do maintenance on, has been a total breeze. No stuck nuts, no fastener at all has given him trouble. In fact, besides getting his hands oily, which is easily fixed, he states that it's the easiest truck he's ever worked on (because of the oil keeping everything rust free/lubricated)
I'm absolutely sure this same logic applies to the internal oiling system of a Toyota engine

This is brilliant. Simply brilliant, I say. I am going to go and poke out a small hole in an oil line towards the front of the truck to replicate this process and to keep the front end all well lubricated. I may improvise and punch out another hole in the transmission - that should take care of the middle of the truck. If I really wanted to be thorough, I may also poke a hole on the rear diff to keep the rear end lubricated.
Think of all the money You save money on PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench. I love this forum for its truly innovative ideas.

The OP...made the analogy that because HE never changed his filter...and his engine was running fine..then he concluded that filters are NEVER EVER NEEDED.
I pointed out that SAME convoluted logic..that...There are many people who smoked and never got lung cancer...you can't conclude that smoking can't cause lung cancer.
The analogy is sound. Both examples show how you CAN'T prove anything from ONE sample.
If you have a hard time comprehending that...I suggest you take up my offer on the class list.

And I'd suggest you re-read the post you made in this thread that smoking causes cancer. Hence my apples to oranges comment, and correlation does not imply causation. Let me refresh your memory.
It does not cause cancer, it merely increases your chances of getting cancer. If smoking caused cancer, there would be a 100% cancer rate in smokers, and that is not the case.
I suggest you re-read my post again....only this time slower so you can understand it.
I said...there is overwhelming evidence compiled over the past 100 years and MILLIONS of patients that smoking DOES CAUSE cancer. To say that Smoking CAN'T cause cancer is irresponsible. I did NOT say that Smoking causes cancer in ALL cases ALL the time (somehow you think I did). But there are MILLIONS of smokers all over the world that died from cancer in the past 100+ years. If these MILLIONS of people didn't smoke then SOME would still get cancer from other means...but there would still be MILLIONS who would never have gotten cancer.
