Smoking CAN cause cancer, not smoking DOES cause cancer. Cigarettes contain carcinogens which can eventually lead to cancer. To say smoking DOES/WILL cause cancer is basically saying "if you smoke one cigarette, you're going to get cancer for certain."

More appropriate would be "smoking increases your chances of getting cancer."
