Sorry but Physics is a key reason to get a 4Runner. Full frame and F=ma.

It's only 250-lb for Highlander vs. 4Runner, and I'm one of those weirdos who thinks a modern unibody is safer than a body-on-frame. There are very valid reasons for getting a BoF, but highway passenger comfort and safety aren't included.

As for driving a mid- to large SUV for the F=ma argument, it's all about personal level of comfort. Unless you are driving around in a full-on 10-wheel commercial tractor rig, you are making compromises in the F=ma=safety argument. I'm not saying go all the way down to a Smart Car, but compromise is compromise.

The Bel-Air significantly out-weighed the unibody above, but that didn't help. And yes, I fully understand that a modern BoF like the 4Runner is light-years beyond the Bel-Air.

The only reason to get a 4Runner is if you do actual off-roading or you are a blacktop wanna-be cowboy who want a vehicle that looks like it can go off road.

If you stay on road (pavement, gravel, or even graded dirt), the 4Runner is a waste of money. This from a guy who loves his 4R, but I'm more about function over form. Something that looks good but doesn't do what I need it to do is worthless to me.

If you want direct comparable, then go with a Highlander. Or a Pathfinder or Explorer, whichever you like. That said, other than for off-road use (4R, XTerra), I find the entire mid-sized truck-based SUV segment to be worthless.

If you stay on the road and want a more cab-accessible cargo room than a car get a car-based SUV with AWD. Something like a RAV4 or Nissan Rogue. If you want even more interior cargo space get a mini-van. Seriously... I realize people have "soccer-mom" hangups over mini-vans, but go drive a Sienna. They handle better, are more comfortable, have more cargo space, are cheaper, and get better gas mileage than a truck-based SUV.

I've driven all of them extensively, even the Sienna, and if it weren't for my off-road requirements we'd have a Rogue for commuting and a Sienna for kid-hauling and vacations.

The MDX is looking mighty sexy these days. Would like to get a M-class but I want to "fit in"

If you think your 4Runner has a tick, go buy any Jeep with a 4.0 inline 6. I had a 1994 Jeep Cherokee that had 183k miles and sounded like a diesel at idle.

You sound like you need a beer. Relax a bit. Go test drive one and you might even trade in your 4Runner. You'll be shocked! And it came with a 36 gallons fuel tank!!! 800 miles a tank!!!

To everyone their own. But me personal I wouldn't buy a full size truck with a v6.

I have not gone "off road" in my 4runner yet, and probably will not do it to the extent that some guys in this forum do. Almost every vehicle I have owned has been a mid-size SUV. I learned to drive on my dad's "89 Isuzu Tropper 4x4, my first vehicle was a '95 Jeep Cherokee followed by two '00 Jeep Grand Cherokees, a '99 4Runner, an '04 4Runner. an '05 Tacoma and now the '15 4Runner TE. All of them were 2wd I owned them because it's what I like to drive and what I feel comfortable in. I don't feel comfortable/safe in smaller vehicles and don't like the lack of cargo space, and I just don't like driving larger vehicles around. I have driven various types of vehicles for extended periods, more than a test dirve and more than a day or two. I can honestly say my 3 4runners have been my favorite of them all.
