Morning folks !

I've tried to ask this in another thread, but it seems better to start a new one. Before the flames come, and y'all want to :hunter:, I can tell you that have read and read over and over again the FAQ and suspension FAQ threads. I have read as much as I can to try to understand what is that I need from other threads. Still, not sure I have it right, hence decided to ask friends with lots more experience than me.

Looking to make this 2002 Sport Edition 3rd Gen a better one. Not crazy crawler, the objectives are:

1. Improve original set up of a 160k miles truck. --》 posh and supple ride please !!!
2. 95% Daily driver, with 5% (ocassional) off road, wheeling, beach.
3. Max 2" lift, and probably 1 or 1.5" is enough.
4. Reduce nose dive.
5. New parts, want to do it once and do it right.

As for tires, already ordered Duratracs 265/75R16 Load C.


Options ? Comments ? Is the Toytec Boss and/or Ultimate kits overkill ?

Seems like the '99 coils would be exactly what you need. Check out [MENTION=79826]absalom[/MENTION]s 'cookie cutter' thread on suspension refreshing. It's pretty much exactly what you're looking for I think. He's got a full checklist of what you would need for a full suspension refresh.

Thank you very much. Yes indeed, I have read that great post. If I go the '99 coils, I would buy them new. Like I said, one objective is to do it once, do it right!

I was gonna say, good luck on posh and supple.

Op, I have had 6 different suspension setups on my 4Runner, and nothing has felt soft or supple. It's not just the shocks and coils that cause the 3rd gen to ride stiff, it's the suspension geometry, wheel base and trac. And yes, the toytec lift is definately overkill. That's a 3.5" rear lift. I would go with 99 coils and original oem tokico shocks if I were you

I've got 99 coils in the front, and nose dive isn't bad at all. But with my 5100s even on the lowest setting, the front end is definately a little taller than stock. So I'm thinking even on the lowest setting I have some added preload than what oem shocks give. That's probably why I don't have much nose dive. As long as he doesn't have added weight up front should be good

I'm just saying - you appear to be putting offroad mods on the truck, but squishy tires and "posh and supple" suspension will rapidly turn into "wallowing and soggy" as soon as you get on the dirt. There's a reason OME rides slightly harsh on the road, it's tuned for offroad and rides like a dream once you start bouncing in and out of ruts and crawling over ledges.

You can't have the best of both worlds, IMO, and by trying to compromise you're actually going to get the worst of both worlds. I wasn't kidding about the Buick, if you want a ride like you're floating on a cloud, you need to buy a sedan or crossover that's built for that. If you want a truck with offroad prowess, stop hamstringing it with mods to improve the perceived ride quality.

OR... pull out the checkbook and invest in some serious suspension candy, like Icons or Kings. You need custom valving and dual or triple-rate coilovers to get what you're aiming for, I think.

If you're willing to spend money on coilovers, I have nothing but good things to say about the Fox Performance Series. TotalAutomotive, a site-sponsor, hooked me up with a great price, roughly the same as what I'd have paid for Toytec coils. Matched with Fox 2.0 shocks and OME 906 springs in the rear, my runner only sits about 1-1.25" above stock height. The ride is firm but comfortable and works well in the Southern CA desert terrain. I would not, however, recommend it for rock crawling applications.

If you're looking to spend less money, I second the bilstein / '99 tall springs suggestions above.

Thank you. Which set of all the six you tried is closer to what I am looking for based on the objectives above?

Also, your comment about the Toytec seems to contradict what others have posted after you: Is overkill and not worth it, or is just the right balance of what I am looking for but expensive?

Seems to me that some of you are saying that YES, it is possible to get there, it is just going to be expensive, with Icons or Fox?
Could you please share your whole setup with all the details and price, if you can, via PM? Thanks a lot !

Also, you meant Bilstein all four around, plus '99 tall springs all around?

My long travel is pretty posh and supple, makes any car I've ever ridden in feel like shit. What's your budget? :D
 
I have the nearly the same tires you do (mine are on 17s), so this is what it will look like with '99 talls. I actually have MONROE 171351 Quickstruts up from, but the effect is the same. The Quickstruts are about $90 each from Rock Auto. I wouldn't call them soft or supple though.

In your first post you said ideally you want 1-1.5" lift. Again, the toytec boss is overkill. The rear coils with that lift will give you 3.5" lift. It is also geared for offroad driving, and adding additional weight. You said youre truck is primarily a daily driver.

For a 1-1.5" lift, with the best overall ride as a daily driver, here is what you you want.

Front
-99 coils with Tacoma Bilstein 5100s

Rear
-OME 906 coils with Bilstein 5100s shocks.

Do that and you will have done it right the first time.

For your lift requirements it doesnt make sense to start talking long travel mega buck setups... and you also said your not going off road too much anyhow..

And "posh and supple" is in the butt of the beholder!!

Another vote for 99 tall coils, with them Bilsteins all around..
