So I have a stock 96 sr5 with the factory Enkel 15" rims and am currently running 31x10.50x15 BFG ATs. I'll be needing new tires soon. When I eyeball the clearances it looks like a 33x10.50x15 would fit. It's my DD and most of my driving is highway but only about 25miles a day. My ultimate plan would be tires, then a OME lift. One last question would my stock gearing be tolerable or will it turn into a complete slug. Thanks all and happy new year.

Well when you eye balled enough, you can be an Iball Engineer. But...

Tim's rule of thumb # 8 says,

"Just because you think it, don't make it so."

I suggest you do some searching of past threads so you can see the struggles of others before you create your own. Which reminds me of...

Ol' Rusty's rule of thumb #3 which states.

"No need for you to make any mistakes, we've already made them all for you!"


Now what is tolerable, since we don't know what gearing you have now, we don't how much you were already tolerating. :eyebrows:

Ah all very true but all posts seem to be one member saying no way and then another coming back with absolutely. I know I can run 33's with a lift but will I be ok with out the lift for the time being?

If you're not going to be using wheel spacers, the 10.5" wide tires shouldn't cause much rubbing issues. Adding spacers will increase scrub radius, which will induce rubbing. You may need to trim your bumper valance slightly, but I actually think you'll be fine.
As far as making your rig a dog- it will, to some extent. That extent depends on your gearing. I am fine with my 315's with 4.30 gearing, but some guys are not.

There is no definite answer to your question. If you want to know can I put them on and will the tire spin the answer is probably. If you cycle your suspension and turn sharply it will definitely rub. IBall is correct in saying the bigger factor than rubbing is gearing. A 33x10.5 is narrower than a 285/75 so there is less chance of rubbing but your diameter will be the same and gearing is a more important issue. The real question is what do you want a 33 for. If you want it to go off-road it needs to be done with other modifications (lift etc) If it is for looks I would suggest you let it go and pick a more practical size

That was my thoughts as well, keeping the stock rims which have 10.50s on them now with no issues. I figured the extra 2 inches would be ok.

Can I give my very wise advice on this? Because I am a very mise man of much wisdom. For a daily driver, instead of 33" tires, go with a good 32" AT tire. Mine are technically 32.4". I promise you they will look substantially bigger than stock. And you will have no rubbing issues, and not loose quite as much power as with the 33"s. And make sure they are a standard or passenger tire. They will be much more comfortable for a daily driver.

Then go with the new 4Runner specific bilstein 5100s up front and put them on the middle notch, and get the rear 5100s and a 1.5" day star spacer in the back. This will give you a much more aggressive look, without compromising the ride quality as much. This is just from my experience, but you will get tired of a big lift and tires when you're doing mainly commuting with the 3rd gen

That's actually what a 33x10.5R15 is . BFG AT's are a load range c, 32.5 '' tall tire . Same width as a 265/75R16 and only 0.8 taller so yeah you'll probably rub a little .

Would 32x11.5 be too big for the 15x7 stock rims? I was considering running 33x10.5 but found a tire i really like in the 32x11.5. Idk if this was the right place to put this but didnt wanna create a new thread since this is basically the same topic
