I know nothing about lifts PLEASE HELP

Been wanting to lift my 2011 4Runner for a while now and finally getting around to actually thinking about doing it. I do a fair amount of off-roading (mostly on the beach for now) and plan to do more when I move out West after I graduate college next year.

It seems like for what I want out of the lift, everyone on here would agree that I should shell out for some actual shocks instead of a spacer lift. What does this mean though? Do I just install new shocks like Bilstein 5100s and my car will be lifted? Or do I need to buy spacers AND shocks? I don't even know what a strut is or how it fits into this equation. Can someone explain to me what parts I need to buy to get this lift done correctly?

Stay away from spacer if possible.

For a mild lift, get Bilsteins 5100 all around. Shocks do not lift the truck, springs do. on the 5100, there are notches to set the spring perch. Those notches can give you anywhere from .85 to 2.5 niches of lift with stock springs. To get a better ride, ditch the stock springs and get OME 884, 885 or even wheeler's springs and set the Bilsteins on the bottom notch only. These front springs will give you anywhere from 2-3".

For the rear, wheelers has the T12 and T13 which will give you roughly about 1.5 - 2.5" inches of rear lift. OME and Icon are also popular with their rear springs. You just have to do a little research on what you want. How much lift do you want? Do you carry any weight? Constant weight? Look, rake, etc..

Now if you have cash to spend, Icon has different stages of lift. Starting around 2k to 5k. All stages comes complete.

I don't ever carry a ton of weight, mostly just a sleeping platform I built in the back of the car, a little bit of camping gear, plus the dog. I do want a decent couple inches of lift for the look as well, hopefully a little more in the front than the back to even out the rake. I want to distinguish my truck from all the moms at the grocery store, you know? I'm probably getting different tires as well, most likely some K02s. Probably 32s.

But if I ONLY installed the Bilsteins all around, would I get lift all around? I'm balling on a bit of a budget as well (college student), so price is a factor and I'm not sure I want to spend more money on new springs if I can still get the lift with just the new shocks.

Yes of course you can have lift with using the 5100 and your stock front springs. Mind you thou, ride will be a bit harsh when you preload the springs. Search 5100 and read up on all the thread about it. Which notch to set and everything.

I've read a ton of the lift threads I just didn't understand the terminology in any of them because I didn't know the relationship between shocks and springs and struts and all that stuff.

Automotive suspension can be a complex subject. Understanding its function, related terminology and various suspension types will help you decipher lift options. Billy 5100s all around, wheelers T1/T13 springs and you’re riding clean and level with 2-2.5” lift. Wheelers will also assemble the fronts for you with their strut assembly service prior to shipping.

This will be your best, cost saving option for sure. Especially the part about having Wheelers assembling them for you. That way it will be an easy job to just swap the old ones out for the new ones.

I'm with the OP regarding not fully understanding the details of lifts. So I appreciate the replies.

From what I've gathered, I think this is what I'm looking for.

For a minimal lift and without having to change any UCA's and no other changes regarding break lines being too short...etc.. This should give me some clearance for 275 tires without having to chop fenders, level the truck and clear up a bit of the nose dive under breaking.

Is this all that's needed or are there other parts I would need as well?

Shocks dampen the suspension by absorbing energy with fluid, springs hold the vehicle up and determine ride height.

Front suspension in a 4Runner uses coilovers - literally meaning the coil springs are over top of the shock body. The coil and shock are assembled and installed as a single combined unit. Because the spring and shock go together - shocks in the front can be used to provide a lift as a result of the spring perch (where the spring platform is set on the shock body) effectively making the total assembly longer and as a result lift the vehicle. Bilstein 5100s do this without using a different spring, they move the spring perch so the effect is a lift. You do not need any additional parts other than what comes in the box. You do need special tools to assemble the coil springs on the shocks before installing.

In the rear, the shock and spring are separate from each other. You can lift the rear by either putting a spacer between the spring and the mount - like the poly spacers on ebay/amazon from a variety of sources, or by replacing the rear spring with a longer/stiffer one.

In the rear if you do put taller springs on - you should also put longer shocks on, but it is not absolutely necessary. Especially if you were to use a small spacer lift.


Tire fitment does not change with any lift height unless you're either replacing the control arms or you are putting on a bracket lift. If it fits with a 3" lift - it fits with no lift. It's just a function of IFS geometry. Yes 285's fit just fine at stock height with the same trimming you'd use at 3" lift height.

Okay, so I'm going to restate some of what has been said here already but try to give you some more details based on what I have learned in the past three years. I'm definitely not as knowledgeable as some of the people here so correct me if I'm wrong anywhere please.

- Lift is most appropriately gained by the use of taller springs, but lifting does require the use of longer aftermarket shocks so that you can appropriately lift without losing that corresponding length of travel of the wheel.

- There are "lift / leveling shocks" out there (Bilstein 5100, Eibach Pro-Truck) that have an spring seat that is adjustable to one of 4-6 pre-set levels so that you can use the OEM spring. Using the OEM spring would require you to either have or rent a spring compressor, or pay a shop to do it for you. Incidentally, adjustable spring seat shocks are not adjustable on the truck, they have to be removed, disassembled, adjusted, and reinstalled. Spring seat adjustable "lift /leveling shocks" are not rebuild-able. The 5100 and Pro-Truck shocks are 2" diameter shock bodies, the Bilstein 6112s are 2.5" (A spring that fits on a 2" shock will not fit on a 2.5" and vice versa).

- You can also obviously use adjustable spring seat shocks set at "0" (i.e., no lift from the spring seat) with a longer aftermarket spring to achieve your lift. Dobinsons, OME, and Eibach all make different length / spring rate springs for the 4R to suit the lift height you're after. Eibach makes the previously mentioned T1, T12, and T13 springs for Wheeler's Off-Road.

- There also are higher-end shocks (Toytec, King, Fox, Icon, Radflo) that use a threaded shock body to make the shocks fully adjustable, meaning that you turn the shock collar with a spanner wrench to lift the coil as much or as little as you want (no presets like the adjustable spring seat shocks). A few of these are adjustable on the truck but most aren't. You would still need a spring compressor to accomplish this on most of them. All these higher-end shocks are 2.5" shock bodies and are rebuild-able.

- You should look into the differences between monotube shocks (Bilstein 5100s, Eibach Pro-Truck) and twin-tube shocks (OME, Dobinsons) before you buy. There are pros and cons to each.

- If you go with new aftermarket springs, be aware of spring rate differences. Increasing the spring rate drastically without adding weight will make the ride much stiffer.

- It is generally accepted as gospel around here that around 2.5" or more of front lift, the suspension geometry has changed enough that you should consider aftermarket Upper Control Arms to restore decent drivability. The change in geometry has to do with the fact that lifting an Independent Front Suspension up higher will bring the wheel slightly closer to the body as well as raising the center of gravity. Aftermarket UCAs come either with adjustable or built-in increased amounts of caster, which is the wheel alignment terminology for how far forward the wheel sits. Increasing caster on a lifted IFS truck will make the driving experience more stable. Having said all of that, there are plenty of examples of guys here that have 3" or more of front lift and are running the OEM UCAs.

- You should budget to have an alignment done (usually $75-$125 a pop) after any adjustment to your suspension. Having a good alignment tech, meaning one that is familiar with lifted IFS trucks, can make all the difference in the ride.

As stated earlier, buying the Bilstein 5100 or Eibach Pro-Truck shocks and using the OEM springs is likely your most cost-effective option. If you're into the idea of lifting with new springs, then there is also the Dobinsons and OME twin-tube kits. The cost goes up from there.

I would definitely read up as much as you can for the next few months before purchasing anything. Every single kit and setup has up and down sides. Good luck man.

The rule of thumb is that if you are a newbie or don’t know much about lift kits ,Bilsteins 5100s is probably the best option out there even for the people who know something about suspension kits. Bilstein 6112/5160 is another good choice but it might be an overkill for you.

Why would you take a perfectly good truck, and then dump a bunch of money into it. You will get a terrible ride, but will look cool to a small group of guys. The higher you lift it, the more problems you will have. Sorry.

I disagree. These trucks have too much body roll in stock form if you ask me. The 5100s make it much more stable and greatly improve cntrol and the ride in my opinion. I do agree, the higher you go, the more it cost and the more issues you may have, but 2” is definitely worth it for looks and ride.

The aftermarket springs and shocks vastly improved my ride quality and decreased body roll over stock, Toyota actually used a similar setup on the TRD Pro until they switched to Fox.

So if I'm understanding this correctly, putting Bilstein 5100s all around will not give me any lift in the back, I'd have to put spacers or longer/stiffer springs. Right?

Correct. 5100s in the rear with stock springs will result in stock height in the rear. Change out the spring or add spacers to change rear lift height.

5100s in the front are slightly height adjustable because of the different perch settings and you are free to choose which perch setting to use. In order to change height, you will have to disassemble the front 5100 and spring assembly to change which perch the spring clip thing is sitting on.
