I love getting T-Boned.....NOT!!

I generally pull into the intersection and I look at the lights and make sure they are fully red since you have a delay before the light turns green for the cross traffic and make sure there isn't a red light runner either then proceed left;if you are in the intersection when the light turns red you aren't doing anything illegal and an extra second or two of patience will prevent a similar accident in the future.

No, he wasn't blocking the intersection or the flow of traffic. I guarentee that 99% of everyone on here does the same thing. They are waiting to turn left and have a flashing yellow or solid green both for yeilding. You inch forward so you are past the bar stop line so if you do not get a chance to go when it is green, you can go when the light changes and all traffic stops. This is exactly what he did but just got unlucky. It's hard to see things like this coming.

If an emergency vehicle comes, you either move or don't. What the OP is talking about doing is barely blocking the intersection from the other direction that does not have any sort of right of way at this time.
 
In the drivers handbook it states a yellow light means proceed with caution. This means you can still enter the intersection. so that means you can accelerate to make the light as long as you don't exceed the speed limit. Front wheels pass into intersection before red light =fair game and if you were in his path when the crash happened then that means its your fault.
 
i will tell you right now that the millions of people that live in this country do it...and it is not illegal...have you ever seen anyone pulled over for it...ive done it 1000 times in front of cops...and for the SECOND time...i was not blocking oncoming traffic...do you people think i have a death wish or something?? the traffic i was blocking was sitting at a red light...AND...why would i gun an suv into a left turn?? that could possibly cause it to flip...again...i dont have a death wish so what happens when the light turns red...am i not supposed to go and sit stopped in the middle of the intersection and/or force the people behind me to back up?? and as far as an emergency vehicle goes....i would get out of the way of it....

Im sorry to be like this and im not looking for sympathy and i kno i asked for you opinions...but dont say something that isn't true..it is not in a single way illegal to sit in the middle of an intersection yielding on green...and dont say speeding up to beat a red light isnt illegal....for damn sure it is cause what happens when it turns red?? thats called blowing a red light..and if you have enough time to speed up you have enough time to stop...now..its different if you are basically on top of the light and it turns yellow...then its legal to go through it....why would you speed up to beat a light if you are basically on top of it??? you would speed up because you are so far from the light and you dont want to A:sit at the light or B:are in a hurry

Im sorry once again to vent like this but theres no need to make up lies and say something is illegal when its not really and you do it....and dont say you dont because you most likely do

And Thank You to those who did give me sympathy and was glad to see i was ok..i do appreciate it alot..i was pretty lucky to get right out of my truck with no injures at all

This is just common sense, but it's also illegal to block an intersection, and you can be heavily fined whether or not you think you were directly at fault for not being able to get through. Some intersections have large "Keep Clear" signs painted on the road to remind you of this (similar in intent to the old U.K. box junction), others have smaller signs somewhere around the intersection; in any case, it's always illegal to block an intersection, whether it's explicitly marked or not."
 
I understand that...but that's like saying You can't turn right on red whether it's posted or not...plus doesn't Cali have the weirdest vehicle laws anyways??
 
That's somewhat true (in my 9 years there, I never saw a yield on green for left hand turn, which never made sense to me)...

However, just because (as some have argued) everybody does it or has done it...does not make it legal or right. We have all probably broke the speed limit and park where we shouldn't...is it legal or right? Let's not be lemmings here.

The reason a lot of people do it...like a lot of laws, it is not enforced. Plus, how many of us read or remember all of the rules of the road outlined in the drivers handbook?

For example, if you are on an interstate...multi-lane...in a construction zone...each lane is separated by a SOLID while line instead of a typical dotted line...do you guys know what that means or is implied? How about the difference between a solid and dotted line?

But think about it this way...if you are sitting out there in the middle of the intersection...left turn yield on green...traffic to your left and right have the red light...you are waiting for a clearing to turn. All of sudden some drunk or deranged driver ignores the red light and crosses the intersection...BAM! Ok, it is his/her fault...but was it worth it to be doing what everyone else does?


Anyway, like I said earlier, I believe the other guy should have been ticketed as well. You suppose to approach the yellow with 'caution'...gunning it is not being cautious.

I think you misunderstand what he's doing. He is NOT blocking the intersection. He is NOT impeding traffic in any way by making this maneuver.

I'm about 2 more mislead responses from making a diagram!:boink:
 
I disagree...you mention 'barely blocking' earlier...define barely.

Those lines are there for a reason...try being out past that line...barely blocking... and see how close a full size semi truck comes to you when it makes a left hand turn on the opposite lanes...even with two lanes.

Sometime if you commit to 'barely blocking' you are stuck because the way the traffic flow and because the guy behind you is 2inches from your bumper...

Nevermind done. The yellow gem is our boy 2004TR4, the red car is the other driver involved. The first picture is him waiting for a clear area in oncoming traffic to proceed with his yield on green or flashing yellow. The second picture is of the light changed to red and he is clear to turn left but the red offending car has either barely made the light or ran a red light by flooring it (by admission to the officer).

Hope that solves any disputes. I am not admitting that our guy isn't guilty, just really unlucky that the circumstances came together for a perfect sh!tstorm on his part.

I think that most people got this. To be clear, it is usually illegal to pull up into the box without turning. We all get that EVERYONE does it. We get that. The point is, up until he turned in front of an oncoming car, he was fine. No cop would ever pull up beside someone and give them a ticket for pulling into the box to try and turn quicker.

But.... the cop had to fault someone. Insurance and state laws usually dictate that.. to speed things up. The cop had to find fault, and he pulled in front of coming traffic. It doesn't matter if or how fast the other guy was speeding. Until our boy here had a protected turn arrow, his turn right is 2nd to oncoming traffic.

and no, the cop technically does not have to fault anyone when an accident occurs. It is completely up to his discretion.

well..i have an update........after getting the door off they found the floor raised, seat bent, and roof buckled..$6000 more in damage on top of the $4500 that there already was....allstate gave my $13,245 for it, i paid $15,000, so i went out yesterday and bought me a 2006 Limited..i LOVE this truck but.....i had to trade in my 2001 Camaro SS...very upset about it....i paid $18,888 for this truck and it has 87,900 miles on it...im the second owner...runs great!

Thats a nice rig! Sorry to hear about the demise of the original 4Runner, but it'd never be the same, no matter how much repair it got...there'd always be an issue.

IMO you didnt lose out on anything by trading in the Camaro. Unless its a classic Camaro, this is the first thing i think of when i hear someone say "I drive a Camaro, dude!"
