I love my gearing!

Did you buy it new? How do you know it came stock w/ the smaller tires?

Don't trust that page...I myself have found discrepancies with it when verifying gear ratios for friends of mine.

Well, then you're the first for me. Did you buy your 4Runner new? How do you know it came w/ the 225s...just curious?

Sorry, but not a single '01 or '02 4Runner came with 4.30s...4.10 was the tallest ratio offered for these 2 years.

P nut's right. Don't believe the door jam sticker. ScottyC on YT recently purchased a '00 4Runner and the door jam sticker said he had 4.56s! It was not until he pulled the gearing (to install a set of 5.29s) did he discover he really only had 4.30s.

The best way to know EXACTLY what gearing you have is to pull the gears and count the teeth. However, I've never heard of anyone pull their gears just to find out what gearing they have then reinstall them. The next best solution is the tire/driveshaft rotation method:

Jack up your vehicle so 1 rear tire is off the ground. Put your vehicle in neutral. Mark the drivshaft universal with a felt pen or anything really. Put a mark on the lifted wheel at 12 oclock. Rotate the wheel so the driveshaft turns. Count how many revolutions the driveshaft makes by turning the wheel 1 revolution. If you mark your driveshaft so the mark is at 12 oclock and also the tire marked at 12 oclock. You should be able to determine your gear ratio fairly acurately. Example...If your driveshaft rotates just over 4 revolutions per 1 revolution of the wheel. Its 4.10/1.
i know i have 4.10's and i had to replace 3rd member, i got to count the teeth twice on each too make sure.

i've always bought all of my gears from these guys, they are a smaller outfit but do big biddness and carry all major brands and have good pricing imo,
i've known these guys personally for the last 6 years and have never treated me wrong and always took the time to tell me what's up even if it's not something i'm trying to hear also if they don't know something they'll tell you so and do some research on it and get back to you, they both worked at randy's ring and pinion tell they got sick of how things where run over there and started their own company, point is they actually work with you instead of just shoveling product in your face and telling you it's the best, really family orientated as well which i like, both the guys who run the shop wheel toyota so are familiar with our rigs, to be honest i was a major jeep guy till i met carl and saw his landcruiser it made me want a yota ever since, and that's how i came to the dark side! lol

just stay away from randy's

i'm going to have carl regear mine to 4.88's here in the next few months!:uzi::D

linky to the site.

I hear that. I hope to have 4.56s or 4.88s in there sooner than not! These 4.10s are killing me w/ 32s. I know I'll need a taller gear when I step up to 285s...sigh.

lol now im starting to think i dont have 4:10s from seeing this 4.300 w/optional P265/70R 16 tire package and all models with locking rear differential this could explain why i didint notice much of a lost when i went to 285s

All factory equipped e-locker models were 4.30's. I thought it was said in the thread already.

2.7lt 5sp 2wd = 3.727
2.7lt 5sp 4wd = 4.100 (4.56 with 265/70's)
2.7lt Auto 2wd = 3.909
2.7lt Auto 4wd = 4.100 (4.56 with 265/70's)

3.4lt 5sp 4wd = 3.909 (4.100 with 265/70's) (4.300 with locker)
3.4lt Auto 2wd = 3.727
3.4lt Auto 4wd = 3.909 (4.100 with 265/70's) (4.300 with locker)

That's how I understand things...

My spec sticker on the B pillar shows I have 3.909's, because that's how it came into the country. The dealer did the upgrade to 265/70's with 4.100's, (i've checked) but they didn't change the sticker.

yup 01 SR5 original owner with the 225's and 15"ers:sobbing:

Sorry you had to find out this way! I figured the shorter gear ratio was the only way your fuel economy was so bad. I looked up the SR5 options in the brochure for 2001 and saw that you were the upgrade package just below the 4.10s. That's the reason you have the different cloth pattern and no exterior trim too. If you regear though you could go with something better suited to your rig's build. Or you could always convince John to get another D90 and take his entire driveline ;):

...Also, people, just because you've got an elocker, doesn't mean 4.30. Most came with 4.10.

Do you have any literature to back that up? I'm not saying you are wrong but everything I have ever read has said that the e-locked axles always have 4.30s. This includes J.A.s site.

Here are the options 97-02 at least.....

Taco, e-lockers had more options if I'm not mistaken......

Axle codes

Axle codes aren't really all that telling when it comes to later model Toyotas. Anything in the later 90s or newer and they are basically useless.

edit: just downloaded the list and that looks like a decently well put together list unlike the previous axle code lists I have seen before. Looks like an actual list of all the axle codes rather than the typical... "if the the 4th letter in your axle code is X, you have x.xx gears and if the letter is Y you have x.xx gears.... blah blah.... At any rate, I'll remove my foot from my mouth.

still doesn't really tell which models have which axle and if the 4.30s come in all e-locked 4Runners though.

so....I'm rolling on 285's with 3.91 gears...explains why my truck is so slow:crybaby:

where can I buy gears from?

i've been buying gears from these guys for years now

Home - Nitro Gear & Axle

they recently got in contact with the manufacture of toyota's gears in china, (i think china could be japan) and has them reproduce the same gears but whatever cut you want, he does good work and is always willing to sit and talk with you for like 1/2 hour while your trying to figure out rpm's and tire sizes and the rest, he's a toyota fan himself and drives a tricked out/lifted.locked land cruiser. give him a ring and see what he can do for you,
i'd stay away from randy's ring and pinion though, they used to be good but have gone to shit in the last few years since all of the orginal employees have pretty much left,
(randy's is 10 minutes from my house and i know those guys pretty well through the everett/mukilteo grapevine)

i'm going after some 4.88's when i go to regear, i was running those on my old jeep 5.9L with 31's and it was great, i was planning on going to some 33's or 35's but never got there but after talking to carl at nitro gears he settled me on teh 4.88's and said they'd be good with that engine for the 31's i had on there and the 33's i was planning on running, it was a beast man, i'm just sad it was a jeep and turned in to p.o.s. too quickly......

I run the Strange Engineering lightened and hardened 4:88 gears in rear of my jeep and have beat on them for years....they still look brand new.
Strange Engineering

I run Yukons in the front and they have held up nicely as well.

If we get everyone to pull of their rear driveshaft and look at the paint code on the pinion shaft, between all of us we should be able to compile a nice list.

lol good luck on that one......:roadkill:

good idea, just don;t see everyone running out to pull the diff to check...lol
