I love my gearing!

i've been buying gears from these guys for years now

Home - Nitro Gear & Axle

they recently got in contact with the manufacture of toyota's gears in china, (i think china could be japan) and has them reproduce the same gears but whatever cut you want, he does good work and is always willing to sit and talk with you for like 1/2 hour while your trying to figure out rpm's and tire sizes and the rest, he's a toyota fan himself and drives a tricked out/lifted.locked land cruiser. give him a ring and see what he can do for you,
i'd stay away from randy's ring and pinion though, they used to be good but have gone to shit in the last few years since all of the orginal employees have pretty much left,
(randy's is 10 minutes from my house and i know those guys pretty well through the everett/mukilteo grapevine)

i'm going after some 4.88's when i go to regear, i was running those on my old jeep 5.9L with 31's and it was great, i was planning on going to some 33's or 35's but never got there but after talking to carl at nitro gears he settled me on teh 4.88's and said they'd be good with that engine for the 31's i had on there and the 33's i was planning on running, it was a beast man, i'm just sad it was a jeep and turned in to p.o.s. too quickly......

awesome! anyone know any prices?

i don't think he cares about the lockers, he's looking at gears, i've also found out every arb dealer is offering the free compressor gig.

and what brand of gears are those for $220?

If we get everyone to pull of their rear driveshaft and look at the paint code on the pinion shaft, between all of us we should be able to compile a nice list.

You can also check by counting the spins of the rear tire when jacked up, i dont know how to do it though.

Jack up just one side, mark the tire, lay underneath and mark the driveshaft. Have your buddy spin the tire TWICE and count the shaft revolutions. If it spins under 4xs you got 3.90s, a little over 4xs you got 4.11s, 4.5xs you got 4.56s... and so on.

Because it's been known to be wrong. I've seen so in person.

Plus, you buy a 4Runner used, the gears could have been changed to a different ratio...I've learned to never trust the vin for gearing.

Yeah that chart is incorrect. It definitely did not work for my runner. Nothing on the door jamb should be used either and the spin n' count is pretty damn difficult when trying to decide if you have a 4.10 or 4.30

Well I'm 100% sure i have 4.10's, i had to replace the diff.

Unfortunately, opening the diff up and counting the teeth is the only way to know EXACTLY what gear ratio a 4runner has...just as John found out. Wish it was easier than that, but that's the only fool proof method.

I am pretty sure i have 3.91s since my car came with 225/75/15, 99 base 2wd auto.

So since i have 265/70/17s now, and even when i had 265/70/16s, it was slow as shit.

So I want to do an OEM toyota 3rd member swap with a locker. I have a guy who has them. What would you expect to pay, and is it just a direct swap?

I don't know much about differentials, I just started a class on them.

If I go from my 3.91s to 4.10s, will it be worth it? The locker, I read earlier, only comes on 4.10s. If it comes on the 4.30s, then all the better, right?

Which gearing would you choose if you were in my situation?

3.91s to 4.11s would be hardly noticeable. It's a lot of money to spend so this would be a total waste IMO. 4.30s would make a bigger difference, but still pretty marginal. You won't really feel a good noticeable difference (at least not your money's worth) until you go to 4.56s. I went from 4.11s to 4.88s and I'm happy, but I would have been pissed if I would have gotten the 4.56s I was considering and spent all that money and still lagged on power.

If you ever plan on going to 33s in the future get 4.88s. If you stay with 31s forever the 4.56s would be best.

Pay about $400 ish for a used one. It is not a direct swap because the diff housing is different between locked and unlocked. You can do some cutting, welding and grinding to make the locker fit if you want. You also have to get a wiring loom to operate it.
I personally don't think the time and effort is worth it for a 2wd. But with your tire size I think you'll definately like 4.30's or 4.56's

I installed last week a set of toyo mt 255/85/16, I have had them for about 2 weeks now and don't really feel a decrease in power. Assuming that at the very least I have 4.1 gears, I am going to keep this gear ratio and test it out when I go to the mountains. If I need to reagear because I don't have enough power to go uphill then I would cosider. As far as the codes on the driver side door I have the following.
VZN185L-GKPZKA
C/TR KF9/LA45
A/TM A03A/
A340F
MADE IN JAPAN
NO.994

This is how it appears on my door, any help from you folks on what gear I have would be appreciated. Steve Chaefer graph states -4.1 & 4.3 if 265/70/16 from factory tire. I know that the best way is to count the teeth, but I believe there should be a simpler way to find out?

According to the chart I post on the first page of this thread they should be 4.30, if the paint codes on the pinion shaft are the same as the earlier ones, pink is 4.10 and blue is 4.30....other than that you are going to have to pull to count teeth.....or call Toyota parts dept. tell them your vin and have them look up a replacement differential for you...course, I think I would rather pull the diff. to be sure.

Thank's notrayray, I have called a toyota dealership but my freind never called me back. I guess he is busy will find out tomorrow and see what he has to tell me. I would post any findings.

I have not had to pull my rear driveshaft yet (mine is supposed to be 4.30 also), I would be interested to know that color on your pinion shaft and the corresponding gear ratio.

why do that when the VIN tells you your gearing??

open the door, read the VIN, check out the VIN decoder...

Toyota Differential Identification - Trucks 4x4 @ Off-Road.com

according to that site i have a 138mm ring gear, 3.36 gears and a 2 pinion open diff(VIN starts with JT and the diff code is A02A) I have a 99 SR5 4wd with the v6. i did not buy the vehicle new but the previous owner still had the window sticker and it said the tires that came on it were the 225/75/r15 with the ecko wheels. the rest of the info on the door tag is correct, i can only assume that the gearing info is also correct

The method I described earlier (jacking up one tire and spinning twice) is actually accurate and can easily be used to determine your gear ratio. When I did it, it was very clear that I had 4.11s and not 3.90s or 4.30s. It went just a little bit past 4 turns, but definitely not 4 1/3 turns.

However, the online chart that I used before I counted it told me I had 4.30s. I still have my old ring and pinions and they are definitely 4.11s. Counting it for yourself is far more accurate than relying on a chart on a website.

And if you guys are that scared of getting an inaccurate count, jack up the whole rear end, then take out the fill plug on your diff, mark the gear and count the teeth (you can easily see the ring through the fill hole).
