I love my gearing!

according to that site i have a 138mm ring gear, 3.36 gears and a 2 pinion open diff(VIN starts with JT and the diff code is A02A) I have a 99 SR5 4wd with the v6. i did not buy the vehicle new but the previous owner still had the window sticker and it said the tires that came on it were the 225/75/r15 with the ecko wheels. the rest of the info on the door tag is correct, i can only assume that the gearing info is also correct

There's no way you have 3.36 gears, they weren't an option on 4runners and that is a good thing.

This is how it appears on my door, any help from you folks on what gear I have would be appreciated. Steve Chaefer graph states -4.1 & 4.3 if 265/70/16 from factory tire. I know that the best way is to count the teeth, but I believe there should be a simpler way to find out?

I wish it simpler than counting the teeth too to know exactly what you have, but there's been too much inconsistency over the years to trust one's VIN code matched to a chart. Do the lift one tire and count the driveshaft method first. If that fails, drain the gear oil and count the teeth as Brian described.

Being that you have an '02, I'm about 99.9% sure your 4Runner would have come stock w/ 4.10s. Count the teeth and we'll know without a doubt what you have.

As I'm sure you already know, 3.36 is not possible...you'd have 3.90 gears at the very least.

The method I described earlier (jacking up one tire and spinning twice) is actually accurate and can easily be used to determine your gear ratio. When I did it, it was very clear that I had 4.11s and not 3.90s or 4.30s. It went just a little bit past 4 turns, but definitely not 4 1/3 turns.

However, the online chart that I used before I counted it told me I had 4.30s. I still have my old ring and pinions and they are definitely 4.11s. Counting it for yourself is far more accurate than relying on a chart on a website.

And if you guys are that scared of getting an inaccurate count, jack up the whole rear end, then take out the fill plug on your diff, mark the gear and count the teeth (you can easily see the ring through the fill hole).

No worries! Just goes to show you how easily someone can be misinformed. At least you had them check them when doing the lockers....now you know with 100% certainty what your gear ratio is.

BTW, I'm jealous of those lockers.

when you do the jack up and wheel/ drive shaft spin count way, if you spin the wheels 10 times it is VERY easy to get correct ratio because the drive shaft will turn 39 41 43 0r 45ish times. This is MUCH more accurate than turning 1 time and trying to guess if the shaft went just shy of four, just past four, four and a third or four and a half etc, etc etc!!!
