Mine looks like that right now......but I spray WD40 all over my chrome, door edges, fender edges, and rocker panels to help prevent this crap from rusting out my truck! I also cake with grease and spray the undercarriage with oil too.......98 4Runner: 1.....Rust: 0!

Salt alone won't damage painted surfaces much. It doesn't "eat paint" as many think. Exposed, untreated metal will corrode faster when salt is present, but it will oxidize anyway due to contact with air and water.
Fightman has it right though...oil protects from both air and water...but it's a bit messy when working under the truck!

The best thing I have found yet is Fluid Film, my work sells it and I buy a few cans every fall and spray my vehicles in any venerable places. It will last until spring and I haven't seen any damage to any painted or plastic surfaces like regular petroleum based products can.
Paint protects metal from salt corrosion. Unfortunately, that doesn't help keep the chassis/frame/suspension and everything else from rusting out. Toyotas have always been known to rust out more/faster than average.

hahaha yeah, that's freaking nuts! i would freak out! my truck has 230K on still looks like new underneath doubt that would happen over there...
so quick question is the Atlantic more salty then the pacific or something or is it just the simple fact that you guys use more salt on the roads over there?
i mean my truck has spent it's whole life within 10 miles of the ocean and most of that time was only like 2 miles or so, so why does someone who live on the eastcoast gets rust bucket after just a few years of the same conditions essentially? is it the sea air? salt used on the roads? any ideas?

Its the first week in about 6 or 7 since we didn't have snow!Yeah, it's the road salt. It's killer in the northeast. Not only do they use rock salt, but they also use brine. No wonder northeast cars turn to rust buckets so quickly. When people around here look for an older used car, they look in the south because they know older cars around here will likely have rust issues.

Mine stay like that for weeks.... mostly because its -16 right now and water would suck. Gotta love that salt. I know that the city I live in spends 1,000,000 every snow fall on salt... most of which ends up on my paint and carpets....lol
