Hi All,
Awesome forum.

So i have to decide if i'm going to actually buy this 4runner and use it as my daily driver. I already won the auction. I'm mostly worried about rust on the frame. This car is from pennsylvania.

It's a 2002, with 172K miles on it. From the pics, it looks pretty good. Tires need to replaced soon too. The second pic of undercarriage looks like almost like a hole from rust, but the seller assured me it is not and he sent me more pics from different angles. You guys see anything fishy from the pics? Please advise. I'll be checking it out in person tomorrow. I'd appreciate any feedback at all!

I'm in California so I don't know squat about rust, but I think that frame has been painted or had a rust treatment done.
 
Looks like there has been some paint work done on the passenger side front door and maybe quarter panel - definitely a different shade. You can really tell in the 8th picture of the listing.
 
I bought my 2000 from the same seller almost exactly a year ago. Like streetcreeper said the frame was definitely painted/treated. That is exactly what had been done to mine. Luckily I live about an hour from him and was able to go and check it out myself. The seller was pretty straight forward in my dealings. From what i could tell most of his vehicles are bought at a local auction, some minor maintenance done, cleaned up and sold on ebay. If the frame is in decent shape looks like a good deal to me. It is hard to tell until you can actually see it for yourself.

I noticed the same thing, and was told by seller there were no accident reports.

Find a way to check the frame.

It's hard to find true gems. I bought my 2001 with 180k on the clock, rust, and some other minor things that didn't work. These trucks will require maintenance, and I'd rather buy something that might take a little work than wait for years for something I might not ever find.

If there aren't any major problems (I understand this is hard to assess through the internet), I'd say pull the trigger. If you find small things wrong with it, it just gives you a chance to try to fix the issues yourself and gain a little more respect for the vehicle.

Life's too short to wait around for 'perfection'.
 
The truck has NO REAR differential lock, which most of us are looking for and the best thing in these 4runners. What you have is the CENTER differential lock. You might want to tell this to the seller and try to negotiate the price a bit.
A rear differential lock should have a switch with RR DIFF LOCK wording and not the cross inside a circle with 4-wheels shown.

No rear diff locks on 01+ 4Runners either, unless someone swapped one on. Can't really tell from the pictures.

But as nissanh said, 99.9% likelyhood is that the seller confused the center diff lock with a rear diff lock.

I spent over a year looking for a decent 5 speed. He had one with only one owner and all the service records done by a dealer not far from me. It had 200k on it but runs like a top. I stopped to look at it and gave a deposit so he would take it off of eBay. Hope you have as much luck as I did. [emoji482]
