Now that my car is lifted I am going to start doing my own oil changes
I am the second owner of the car and with it being at 140k miles I want to use the best oil I can find for it
I believe that it has had either a blend or a natural oil (whatever Toyota uses) but now I want to switch to a synthetic oil
I’m figuring I need a high mileage oil with a detergent in it but I don’t know what brands to look at
On my my motorcycles Mobil 1 4stroke full synthetic with moly was my go to but I bought all my motorcycles new
I’m looking at Pennzoil full synthetic high mileage
Is there anything else I should look at and should I do some sort of engine treatment first?

Any name brand synthetic is good. You just want to make sure to use the proper OCI. When it comes to high mileage oil I would recommend reading up on it at BITOG. From what I read over there they typically recommend only using HM oils if your vehicle is leaking or using oil.

I use Mobil one EP synthetic 5w-30 and do a 7,500-10,000 mile OCI.

Regular, on time maintenance will out do any oil + special treatments. Hopefully the maintenance history on your rig showed some regularity.

As to oil, take your pick as long as it meets spec. These motors aren't known to be picky on oil. The cheapest full syn + Fram can of death for a 5k OCI is suffice. Pay a little bit more if you want to extend your OCI's a bit longer.

The High Mileage formulation question. That's another great debate if needed or not.

Ultimately, its your rig and your money. Run what gives you the tinglies.

These "best" oil threads either get trolled or flamed. The only way to know what your motor likes is to pick an oil and filter combination, then continually test the used oil through an oil analysis.

Spend a few hours on Bobistheoilguy.com/forums if you want your head to blow up with opinions from online oil nerds.

Just regular conventional oil is all you need... and is all I use. I have 203k on the odometer if that counts for anything.

That said, do buy Denso / OEM filters... I have found them to be built better than most else that is out there.

I change regularly and early if I feel like it, and can afford because I am not tossing high dollar oil all the time.

I use walmart supertech full synth at 17bucks for 5 quarts. And an OEM filter.

You may scoff but its actually pretty good oil. I had an oil analysis done after 8500k and the oil looked good.

WalMart occasionally puts the 5qt jugs of Mobil-1 on sale for about $23 in my area. I'll stock up since this is what I run in all 3 vehicles. I stick with the Puralator "Pur-1" filters from Advance but any higher-quality filter will do. Just stay away from the orange-can Fram from WalMart. I'm pretty sure there's only a postage stamp worth of filter material in those.

I have an '03 with 180k miles. At about 120k miles I noticed a small oil seep at the rear main seal (between engine and transmission). I read on a forum to try the High Mileage Mobil 1 because it has additives that expand the seals. I had nothing to loose, and the increase in cost from the regular Mobil 1 5W30 is negligible. Within a few weeks the seep stopped and I haven't seen it since. I'll be sticking with this oil for the life of the vehicle. Here's a link.

I go with the high mileage stuff because of the extra additives for seals. I also just started using Rislone https://rislone.com/product/engine-treatment/ about 2 or 3 weeks before an oil change, preferring the full size over the concentrate size but they're probably real similar. I think you can add the Rislone when you change oil too, but I think I use semi-synthetic oil in all vehicle and mostly want it too prevent sludge build up but it has other enhancing additives too.

My '03 Tundra 2UZ-FE engine wasn't picky about 5W-30 oil, but it really chewed up Castrol Syntec and was puffing a small amount of oil smoke at cold startup after approx 3000 miles on the oil fill. I'd been running Mobil-1 High Mileage prior to the experiment with Syntec, and switching back to M-1 eliminated the startup puff for the entire 5K oil change interval the entire time I had the truck. Sold it at 135K miles to get a Tacoma.

This was 2007-2011, and oil formulations have changed since then. My most recent pick has been Quaker State synthetic, but they stopped selling that flavor two months ago. I have Pennzoil synth high mileage on the shelf for next oil change.

With that said, GM's new Dexos 1 Gen 2 specification may change my preference. I like a lot of molybdenum additive, and both QS and Pennzoil used to have the highest quantity in an off-the-shelf oil. All 3 of my vehicles run quietest with these high-moly oils. I've been watching BobIsTheOilGuy.com for an oil analysis of Pennzoil's latest formulation that carries the Dexos 1 Gen 2 label, to see if the additives have changed. No dice yet.

I only use Pennzoil ULTRA Platinum (Yellow Jug now) & new WIX XP Platinum syn. filter.
- I've never used extended mileage oil
- used the above in my RAV4-v6 4x4, 2000 4Runner SR5 3.4L-v6 4x4 and a 1998 Silverado 5.7L 4x4
- plus John Deere garden tractors (318 & GT262), other small engines, etc.

Last time used AMSOIL Racing grease, on Gen3 driveshafts.

Only did my first 3.4L-v6 oil change, last week...@ 137,900 Km

I use mobil 1 high mileage 5w 30 with a 10,000 OIC. I have 201k on my 4 runner. But last 30,000 miles or so I've been losing 1.5 quarts between oil changes (5.5 in, 4.0 out).

I may give the penzoil a try and see how it does. Also I run an oem filter bc I ready a study that showed that they actually had the most media in them. I butyl them by the case from amazon for $4.20 a filter.

Too lazy to look for the review or video, but there was an awesome review on the OEM Toyota / Denso filter internals vs many other brands and I was amazed in the lack of quality of some of these other filters.

It didn't take long for me to see that the OEM / Denso was the right choice. No need to fix what isn't broke or go looking for trouble. Plus its a good deal if you buy in bulk. I bought a case of 10 at $4 each but I have paid about the same from Toyota parts in the past as well.

I thought of high milage oils and things, but its just conventional with an additive package. I've seen additives cause just as many problems as they have fixed... I figure why rock the boat if everything is working as it should. Plus its not like the dealer or any other lube place goes out of their way to pump in fancy oil. All comes out of the same 55 gallon flavor of the month they get from the lowest bidder.

Bottom line is maintain your car regularly, change the oil regularly, and you will be rewarded with years of reliable service.

Me, Myself, and I always choose pure cold pressed canola oil. It is superior to all other oils since it is trans fat free. Cant be clogging up the oil passages with gunk!:thumb:

I would concentrate on having the best filter you can buy and then running any decent quality synthetic oil. from everything I have read, seen tested and experienced You really can't beat Amsoil filters and oil. I would go with an Amsoil, Mobil 1 Extended Performance or Wix XP filter. I have a commercial account with Amsoil, but because I can get Mobil 1 EP filters and Oil for a fair amount less at Wally World I have switched to them and run 10k between changes. I still believe Amsoil to be a little better overall, but don't think it is really going to make any difference unless you are always operating under severe conditions and use.

Check out the Amsoil product line. Many seem to claim it is the best, but it is also expensive. May not be worth it, but at least worth looking at a brand some seem to swear by. Mobil 1 synthetic seems popular with many, so prob can't go wrong with them and a more affordable option.

As long as you change your oil every 3~5k miles, any oil will be fine. Sure different oil's have different additives, but in the general scheme of things, they are pretty much all the same. Personally, I use Amsoil when I can get it (my buddies an Amsoil seller so I get it for dirt cheap).

As for oil filters, they are constructed differently. I just avoid Fram like the plague. I either use WIX or Purolator filters.

Amsoil filters have actually been beaten by the competitors in the past. That being said, amsoil is the only lubrication I run in all of my vehicles I own/service. I use their top if the line synthetic with Napa/wix filters on my LX470 with an OCI of about 15k, with Blackstone reports suggesting I take it to 20k. (Don’t worry, I’m not pushing 15)
