That surface rust could easily be more serious than it looks.
Frame rust is a big problem. Other than that, a 1st gen is far superior to a 2nd gen.

oh yeah, I have my asbestos underwear on.

;)

i love my 2nd gen but its not stick if it was i would keep it i feel the automatic is coming up short

As bad as this sounds...I wish my gen2 was auto....when I go out n drink my gf (d2)can't drive stick so we gotta take out the new car....which I hate putting miles on lol...

I don't need to drink and drive but what I do need is a good yota for wheeling I just feel like a stick would be better but this 87 looks like it would be good but a strate trade truck for truck I think I would be on the short end

You haven't wheeled a stick-shift, have you? Lots of guys prefer a stick for off-road, but you won't find many of them arguing that it's better or easier. It's much harder to drive a stick in the rough stuff.

Assuming that they're each mechanically sound, those trucks are roughly equal in value. One is a 4door, which can be nice, the other one has a removeable top, which can be nice. One is an auto, which is great for wheeling, the other is a stick, which is great for everything else. The 3.0 has more power, which is great, the 22re gets better mileage and is practically bulletproof, which is also great. Don't get hung up on trying to find some kind of absolute value or which truck is worth $100 more, you'll go crazy. If you want his more than yours, trade him.

Personally, I would definitely prefer the 1st gen 22re manual. But I don't need a useable back seat, and I'm ok with the gutless 22RE. Your mileage may vary.

I thought a stick would be better for wheeling. But slowly starting to realize an automatic wouldve been better. When coming up on rocks and trying to get the truck over larger obstacles I have killed it a couple times. Then I have to sit on an obstacle or incline and restart it. Wouldn't have this issue with an auto, just gas it and be on your way.

Yup. With the viscous coupling in an auto, you don't have to worry about stalling halfway up an obstacle, you don't need three feet to get going again, and you don't normally have to worry about roasting the clutch.

Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer a manual just on general principles. But I do like the look on my friends faces when they choke and die on the same obstacle I just idled up... :)
