Looking for a winch that will not break the bank.
I think i want synthetic

looking at the warn vr8000-s, but budget is around $600

We have a smittybuilt 10k on the 03 runner and it has held up great. for 600 you should be able to get the waterproof one with a synthetic winch line.

What model would that be. Zak had a good suggestion for the engo 10000s, goes for around 425 with synthetic

those are some nice winches only thing holding me back is the reviews they get.

its like 50/50 love/hate, and it seems like everyone replaces these "shittybuilts" with warns or superwinches

I've had the X20 10k SmittyBuilt winch on my truck for over a year now. I've used it for just about everything. I've maxed it out a few times. Recovered in 4-6 feet of snow. Pulled fullsize pick-ups out. Tundras, Tahoes, you name it. Pulled trees out of the way.

My only complain (you will hear this from other places too) is the solenoid is not sealed very well. I made the mistake of not sealing it from the word go. Eventually it stopped working. I have the lifetime warranty on it but but ended up pulling it all apart and cleaning it up, then RTV the shit out of the box. It works now but I bought an extra solenoid just in case. It was cheaper to order the solenoid than to drive down to 4Wheelparts multiple times and have them troubleshoot it.

If I did it all over again I would have gone with a Warn. Smittybilt are decent winches. Just make sure you RTV the piss out of the solenoid box.

I have an Xrc8, works great. Just bought synthetic line for it too.

I've had the same issues as Kurtis mentioned with my old milemarker winch.

Don't go for the bottom of the barrel Warns. I read some where they are made with cheaper materials to keep the price competitive.

I bought the Superwinch Talon 9.5SR for mine. It's a little more than your budget, but it's a great winch that shouldn't have to be replaced in a few years like the cheaper winches. I also mounted the solenoid, which Superwinch says is made waterproof, inside the engine bay above the passenger side fender. But, that's on a 3rd gen so you may have to find a different location.

I bought my winch from eTrailer.com. They honored a low price guarantee by giving me 10% off the lowest price I found at truckaddons.com. It was just under $900.

I had the Warn M8000, it had no issues pulling my first gen 4Runner up and over some nasty rock-strewn hills, also pulled my buddies Samurai over said hills as well.

It got wet and continued to work like a charm.

Yes, true. I read that too.main differences are motor speed and solenoid vs contacts

This winch is double the cost of a vr8000, or 350 bucks more than a vr8000s. That's a big price difference. Funny thing is when it comes to my vehicle it's a big debate. When I sell these to customers, it's what can I make the most money on lol. Although, last 3 that I sold were warn xd9000i, westin something, and a warn m8000. All of these never came back with issues. Or have seen offroad lol, mall crawlers.

My concern is fitting it behind the bumper too. Since I am using a bud built hidden winch Mount.

Everything I read, it's I should have gotten a warn or super winch.

Would you guys also just go cheap and buy steel cable first then go synthetic later?

I kept my steel cable. Yeah, weights more but I don't have to worry about the winch line rubbing up against rocks or tree or anything. I can also wrap the cable around a downed tree and connect it to itself and pop the tree in half. I like the utility of it. Can do that stuff with out fraying a synthetic. Just my .02 cents.

That's a good price. But they're charging $70 for shipping. Yikes! Mine was $890 shipped. It still may be out of the OP's budget.

i was thinking, i want a mercedes or a BMW, thats warn and superwinch.

even a entry level mercedes still is better than top of the line kia, IMHO

so a entry level warn is still better than a top of the line engo or smittybuilt...slight exaggeration there but you get the idea.
