Well, it really speaks to someones character when they would blatantly lie to a prospective buyer of their vehicle about the maintenance history...especially regarding something that many (most) auto enthusiasts would agree is a crucial part of automotive upkeep, as both of these threads have shown.

I have a 02 ranger its 12 years old with 220k if I do sell who ever buys it will just happy if just turns on. I'm not planing on selling my ranger, I need it.

The entire point of this maintenance is to AVOID having to replace the engine...

While it is true that we americans change our oil way more often than we need to, and that in itself is a waste especially when running synthetics, its still needs to be changed. Its kind of like underwear, you should change it

Hey, I'd rather change it too often than not often enough. Especially driving a 27 year old truck that I'm too lazy to motor swap (unless it forces me to!).

Case in point, I just did an oil change with a 1400 mile interval. Why? Well, the oil was 4 months old and i felt like it.

What I think is funny with this thread is that everyone that is jumping on this guy has no first hand knowledge of what happens when you don't change your filter and assumes that because someone told you that you had to do it makes their position supreme. Don't get me wrong, I am not going to take the chance, but if the guy really ran that long without changing his filter, maybe it isn't that critical.

I also like it that people bash Fram, again with no factual information. I have yet to find anyone who's engine failed because of a Fram filter.

My readings thus far from members on this forum with respect to Fram oil filters is interesting. I've used standard Fram oil filters and Castrol oil religiously for the past 25 years. Oil and filter always changed at 3,000 miles.

So far I've purchased 4 vehicles in my life with around 100,000 miles each on the odometer. I've sold each of these vehicles with nearly 200,000 miles on the odometer.

Not once have I ever had an issue with a standard Fram oil filter. Now I wish I would have cracked open one of these filters just to take a look inside.

What makes the Fram filter such an inferior product compared with others on the market? If there are better filters, then I will definitely purchase.

I think what most were agreeing on is the logic behind using a filter and that it is a good idea. Nobody here is running lab tests on the effects, you're right. But everyone can understand the basics of what a filter does and why it is a good idea....that's the whole point I was trying to convey, it's a good idea. Most would agree with that.

I had an issue with Fram once that will cause me to never use them again. I put one on my 86 4Runner and 3000 miles later when it was time to change the oil, I removed it and found that no oil ever made it into the filter.... The filter was faulty from the factory. Ever since then I have used OEM Toyota filters, and have not had a fault.

you know... if you're gonna do this, at least get a GOOD oil filter. The standard orange Fram you use is about THE worst pile of crap filter you can buy. the bypass was probably stuck open from the factory.

Not to mention I have seen a lot of nasty filters (I wish I had pictures now...) as well as one or two that caused oil pressure issues and those that never did because they were always bypassed.

While I basically agree with you, I feel the point is when you see someone running naked in public, do you berate them endlessly for living their life as they see fit (Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, etc.), or do you simply move on to the next thread?

Yes, he may sell it someday, but as always when purchasing a used car; buyer beware. If some of the posters here are really worried the OP might unload it on them; don't buy a T4R in Dallas. Problem solved! :dance:

You know what I was thinking...all those filters you and your friends seen disintegrating, who really knows how long they have been in service for right? The previous techs could've just been lazy bastards and never replaced it, until these guys got luck with a respectable tech like yourself.

It certainly would not surprise me if some shadier places get too lazy to replace the filter, then compound that with an owner that doesn't give a shit; a filter could go un-replaced for who knows how long. Just playing the devils advocate here.
