I picked up my truck and have a 2 questions/issues

04 limited v8 4x4. First off, I love this truck! Leaps and bounds ahead of my rav! Don't laugh!!! I didn't notice any klunk on stops and starts and smooth as can be on the highway.

There are two issues I need input on.

1. There is a mild high pitch rattle coming from the rear inside driver panel where the jack is located. This happens when I am a road with some bumps but not present on smooth surfaces with only a few bumps here and there. When I hit on the panel it makes the noise. I tried making sure the panels were locked in and the jack and tools are secure. Still does it. Not a major issue but could get a little annoying after a while.

2. This is a more serious issue. Everything was great on the 50 mile drive home on the turnpike and some driving around town. We stopped to eat and I put the E-brake on. When we left my wife drove. She forgot to take the e brake off. It was maybe down half way. Anyway, we went about a mile and a half and started going down a main road in more of a coast with minimal throttle. We started hearing knock, knock, knock very rapidly until she used the brakes and pulled over. It was coming from the rear of the truck and I at first thought the drive shaft was coming loose. Looked under the car and everything looked good. I could smell the burning breaks but didn't know what it was until I got in the driver's seat to finish the drive. E brake light was on! Drove about 5-7 miles home and didn't hear it again. Was the e-brake the cause of this knock? Please tell me it was!

Everything else is great! The underside has minimal rust and the v8 seems to be surprisingly good on gas! I only used 1/8 of a tank according to the fuel gage on 70 miles of driving. I was expecting it to be at half tank!

Congrats on the new truck. You're going to love it, it'll become an addiction if you're not careful. Then you'll spend all day at work looking up things to do to it. :keyboard:

1. Rattles annoy the crap out of me. I have to find the source of them and stop them at all costs. You may end up having your wife drive around while you're in the back trying to find the source. Could be a simple screw that needs to be tightened or something could need some felt tape. The rattle you describe isn't a common 4Runner complaint that I'm aware of so you'll just have to experiment a little.

2. Yeah, I don't remember exactly what the mechanism of action that caused the thumping but I've definitely done that before in my first 4Runner. I was used to the Ebrake in the middle console from my previous car and missed the fact that I somehow engaged the Ebrake. I seem to recall the ABS light or something coming on and the noise you're describing. I had to turn the car off, wait a few seconds and turned it back on and then all was good. Just go find a hill to park on temporarily and see how well it's holding. These Ebrakes on the 4th gens aren't their strong points so if you feel it's not holding well get it checked out (or check it out yourself).

I did the exact same thing days after I got my '06 in April! I was freaking out!!!! Made all kinds of scary noises. I pulled over then saw the brake light on like you and just simply disengaged and all was 100% and never happened again. (And needless to say, I have NOT forgotten to take the ebrake off since!

No worries at all.

For the rattle, sounds like it may be something rubbing on a plastic panel. Check the jack & over-the wheel-well storage covers for any powdery residue. These will be the contact points. Make sure that everything in the jack storage area is secure especially any screws holding things in place.

I am thinking the brake issue is from never being used before and the calipers did not return. I forgot to look when I did the shocks but is the E-brake using the caliper or is there a drum inside the rotor with shoes holding the rotor? Either way you may want to jack it up and take off the rear wheels. Inspect the cables and shoot some penetrating oil in them. For some reason I had gotten into the habit of using my e-brake all the time. The 4 Runners E-brake pedal is for people with small feet. Wish they would have given us a cable release instead of having to put your foot back on it. Congrads on the purchase!!!!

Shot in the dark, I am not sure if 4runners have these or not, but check for a heat shield that is near the exhaust. I used to have an Isuzu Rodeo, it had one, and one of the 3 brackets was rusted through, and that cause the rattle.

I'm surprised no one mentioned this... The tools are secured by a rubber strap to the vehicle, but they are not secured vertically and so on rough roads or bumps the tool pouch could jounce up and down. Its something I noticed in my 4Runner after owning it a while.
