I pod nano question. is it supposed to work with the dash buttons?

Hey all, I didnt get a manual with my truck and I am wondering if I am supposed to be able to work my I-Pod Nano from the dash radio when hooked up.... not sure how it is supposed to work. I have to work it from the nano itself while its hanging out of the console....not to safe when driving...dont really like it. thanks for the replys.

all it is doing is routing the output through the radio so no controls
