maybe its the miserable weather here right now but i dont get how many people are lined up to pay 1300 bucks and wait a month or two for one of these racks. albeit, i am in a pretty bad mood with this monsoon going on right now

If it makes you feel any better, I'm the kind of guy who likes to buy expensive mods, but I wouldn't touch that rack's price with a 10 foot pole.

It's a great rack, but $1,300 is so ridiculous that anyone (with a typical 3rd gen owner's budget) who spends that kind of money on a rack is a jackass.

I like your roof rack very much, mainly because it does remind me of the Gobi, but I've never been able to justify spending loads of cash on some bent metal... I got a mind blowing deal on a BajaRack once and I still didn't do it.

Your price is far more reasonable, but it still takes every fiber of my being to say Yes on a rack that costs over $300. You must be doing something right if you've got me to agree, still surprised that more aren't interested.

well said, even before i started building anything i couldn't understand why the price was so high. now, years later having all the junk to build one, i cant justify charging that much and i'm using the same materials and in some cases heavier/better stuff, granted, mine arent powder coated but i feel like theres plenty of room in the price for taking care of that.

aww hell, im grumpy today, most rainfall in a single calendar day in over 35 years for this area, could have kayaked in my yard. to each his/her own, Lord knows i've bought some ridiculous stuff that only i seemed to think was cool lol. ok, thats my rant.

1) 60" SHARP LCD TV from Costco
2) 13" Macbook Pro or Air
3) Complete Alpine & Infinity sound system for your T4R
4) Nikon or Canon DSLR
5) Sonoran Steel 1.2A Lift Kit for 4Runner
6) ARB Front Bumper & custom sliders
7) TWO Whitson roof racks!


Those are just a few ways to spend $1300.

To the OP: Your $550 rack does look very good to me and the price is very reasonable for custom metalwork.

So if anyone is even interested in a roof rack then get the Whitson rack!

Its amazing that so many people will pay $1300 + tax + shipping to instantly lose 2-3 MPG.

I've spoken out against roof racks before and I know some guys really like them but the way I see it is that if you don't go out for more than 2-3 days at a time and don't have kids then you probably don't need one.

Even if I did go out for 3-5 day trips I still wouldn't get a roof rack. I would instead opt for a rooftop cargo carrier which easily attaches to the factory roof rack.

The plain fact is that most guys drive around town with an empty roof rack. I would say that in over 90% of all pictures on T4R.org, if there is a roof rack present it is empty. Simply trolling the picture gallery will confirm this.

you're right. 1.3k is a heck of alot of money for a rack like that. If you stick around long enough I know for sure i'm gunna buy that rack you made. its just tight on money. The gobi looks awesome, and when I have the rack you made and tell people I paid half of what they did, boy are they gunna feel stupid

your roof rack is very nice whitson, but i see some stacked tack welds in some older pics of your rack, i know on thin stuff its hard to weld but i would really like to have the rack welded with full beads if i was to buy one, not trying to be a ****, this is just my 2 cents. But all that aside i love your rack will buy one for sure in the future.

Stacking tack welds, or stitch welding, is unavoidable with thin material. Otherwise, I would have to use a very cold weld to keep from burning through, which would limit penetration, and strength. It's just the nature of thinner material. Some don't like the look but I tend to leave the welds un-ground. It wouldnt take much to grind them smooth in the case of butt welds.

True, .065 wall tube i assume? i agree it takes a lot of tuning and skills to weld thin stuff with out burning through.

i actually like products with out welds grinded down, i'll spread the words for you on other forums, this is deff a great deal.
