I should have kept my 3rd gen

bought a bmw x3. Its fast and a serious cruising vessel for long trips but man i miss my 4runner for exploring, camping and carrying a shit ton of stuff. So im building another one. Just have find a good specimen first.

Use the search engine Autotempest. You can search multiple Craigslist sites, Auto Trader and Cars.com all at the same time.
 
Once you get the 4runner bug it never leaves. I've had three, and had a four year hiatus and just got another one. I'll probably never not have one again. Good luck in your search...
 
This is good timing. I've been seriously considering selling mine to move up to a newer Tundra. But then I remember that the 4Runner is 100% paid off, runs great, looks rad, and then I think I'm better off without a new truck. I do really have a man crush on the Tundras though.... [emoji57]
 
I'm in the same boat with eyeballing Tundras. I'd really like a truck for the utility but I have to remind myself that I really haven't found anything I can't haul with my 4Runner and my buddy's small trailer... Except for a larger camper but that opens a bigger bag of worms! I'd probably be like the guy who sold me my 4Runner and shed a tear as it drove away... True story- I had to stop and tell him she's going to be well cared for. That was 88k miles ago and I still send him updated pictures now and then.
 
I had a 2nd gen, and sold it when I moved back to FL thinking I didn't need two cars and no real use for 4WD. Then I started needing a little more cargo space for work, and had to skip a trip to visit my family for the holidays because the weather was too bad for the car (they're in the mountains), and decided it was time for another one.

Now, I'm doing a lot of highway driving and my current one is well over 200k, so I'm thinking about getting a 4th gen. But I can't stand the thought of getting rid of this one, so I'm just going to take it to our place in VA and use it while I'm visiting.

I think the 3rd gen is just going to get more and more desirable as the years go on. The newer ones are nice, but there's just something lost with all the extra bells and whistles.

I am new to this forum but I agree totally!! I have had several Toyota trucks and 4Runners over the last 30 years now and my kid has killer Toyota trucks and 4Runners. I started with a tricked out 82 single cab 4x4, then an 86 extra cab 4x4 to an 86 4runner 4x4 and now a 96 4runner 4x4 3.4 manual trans with elocker (bought this one 3 months ago). Oh my gosh! I live in Bishop, Ca. and I love my 96 to no end. I have done some mods already and have years more planned (Really cool doing all the work myself, endless new things to learn).
 
recently sold my is350 for my 3rd gen... it stings when i am riding solo... but when i see my family in it i know i made the best trade :) yota life!

I think you are right about them becoming more desirable. The prices haven't gone down at least in my area. I'm confident I could sell mine for what I paid for it 3 years and 40k miles ago.
 
I've had my 3rd gen about 8'ish years now. It's time for something else... thought maybe getting a fun 4dr AWD car this go round (need it for the kids + winters here). Everytime I've came to the decision of going that route... I end up on the 5th Gen lifted thread and started to doubt my decision. :|

I see the same thing here. I keep an eye on Craigslist, and every now and then one will pop up that looks like a good deal, but they're getting few and far between.

I bought mine for $4k with about 170k on it. I've done a lot of work to it (mostly preventative and a few minor upgrades) but there's no way I'd let it go for $4k now, even with 212k on the clock.
 
Glad to hear everyone else values their 3rd gen. I mentioned before how I plan to keep mine, but the proof is already in my purchases. I'm expecting a total of approximately $3k invested into preventative maintenance parts (doing the work myself) for mine here soon in expectation to take me near the 300k mile mark. I never would have done this with my 1989 S-10 Blazer...

Problem for us up north is rust. :( Otherwise I'd definitely be able to ask for more if I wanted to get rid of mine.
