I installed a Pioneer head unit about a year ago but kept everything else 100% stock...

Headunit:

Since then I added a roof rack (wind noise), mud terrains (road noise), and the truck just kept getting louder and louder haha.

I don't have a premium audio package... just the standard SR5 stuff that came on a 2004.

Any recommendations for speaker and amp combo?

I want to consider the value end of an upgrade where I can just drop in speakers without external amplification.

I don't really want an audiophile setup per say, but I do know what good speakers sound like so I also want to consider the value end of mid to high tier setup too with amplification. If its in budget and or if the value is there, I dont mind spending a little more.

I much prefer the simplicity of my first option assuming it actually sounds good.

Anything is better than stock. A nice set of components for the front and coax for the rear. You only need 6.5" speakers. As long as you don't buy some Walmart speakers you'll probably like it. I got focals ... Really nice but costly.

yes... generally when you buy components they come with tweeters. I installed some 1.75" tweeters on mine. Had to create a custom mount but if you buy 1" tweeters they should fit if I'm not mistaken on the size.
 
So for a drop in fit, I need 6.5" Components with a 1" tweeter up front and a pair of 6.5" coax speakers in the rear?

I have seem some people need some type of adapter to raise the speaker for magnet clearance... I am really trying to avoid having to do anything like that.

Should I get components for the rear as well and retrofit the tweeter, or can I find a coax speaker that blends well? I guess its just for fill anyways, I don't really get much from the rears right now. Seats are generally folded down for cargo too.

Awesome... I figured anything would be better than stock but often times I find head units lack the type of amplification needed for higher end speakers.

Focals are good, I used to own them a long time ago along with some MB Quarts. Its been 20 years since I actually went car stereo speaker shopping. I just don't intend on spending that type of coin right now... I would need $300-400 per pair to get Focal stuff plus an amp. I would like to keep it around $100 +/- 20 bucks per pair.

I know speakers can be a very personal thing but I just dont have the time to go store to store to check this stuff out. Anyone have any preference or other recommendations?

I was thinking of JL Audio, some more budget options like Pioneer components. I see some JBL, Fosgate, Infinity Primus, JVC, MTX, Polk, Alpine, Kenwood and a couple others all for under $130 per pair.

My biggest concern if hooking them up and feeling like they need some help in the internal amp department. I want something a bit more efficient so I know to stay away from the higher end items that generally benefit a lot from an amp.

what brand would you recommend for the upgrade? I need to change them sometime this summer.
 
I start with a low end focal. Even there auditor line is a good start. Then apply some good sound deadening on the doors and have an amp on the speakers later. If you really got some cash, I would do a nice amp and front speaker setup with some sound deadening to start. I have a full blown setup so my suggestion can be a little too much.

Little speakers? You mean the tweeters?

I replaced them on both my 4Runners

If you want louder volume then you need external amplification. Drop in speakers will not make the system much, if any, louder.
 
Sounds like OP wants a simple upgrade (swap).
What does the crowd think of this?
Fronts: Rockford Fosgate Prime R165X3 (range: 2-45 watts RMS)
Rears: Rockford Fosgate Prime R1525X2 (range: 2-40 watts RMS)

I do need louder volume...

What specs should I be looking at? I think sensitivity spec plays into db or efficiency and volume?
 
The speakers my SR5 04 T4R came with were 6x9 front and 6.5 rear.

You will need some form of stand-off or the back of the speaker will hit the window mech.

I pulled apart the OEM speakers and used them for the mounts, some pics in my build thread, Black-N-Blue, first page, post #9.

I would say anything is going to be better.
I like more detail than noise in my music.
These Pioneer are working well, clear clean sound not a lot of thump though.

So you no longer have a tweeter in the door?

I wonder if I can find some 6x9 components....

I should really pull a door, I am getting mixed sizes here but you have the same truck as me down to the year and trim...

I was hoping for something as drop in as I could get but if I need to fab up some stand-offs or pull them off the existing speakers I guess that isn't bad at all.

Just go to Crutchfield.com, and search for speakers that will fit. That's how I found the Fosgates.

I just left the OEM tweeter.
Crutchfield has mounts to, usually included so you don't have to mod the old speakers for the mounts.

You can go 6x9 or 6.5... its really preference... adapters are cheap but you can chop up the old speaker for a mount. You should really take a look at your door just so you got an idea of what you're going to need and how you're gonna do it. The door panel is easy to pull.

Yea, if you're not adding an amp then you want high sensitivity.
These Polk components have a 92 sensitivity and are a good all around speaker setup in a budget price point. Also, crutchfield will give you any adapters you need, detailed instructions, and great customer support.
