i6 in 3rd gen... hypothetical

ok, I have a thing for inline 6 engines... they are sexy to me... nuf said

it's doesn't have to be a toyota engine... but would be prefered...

sadly any i6 toyota is probably too old... unless:

96 4runner with 1996/7/8 i6 toyota land cruiser drive train... technically it's 'newer' or same age.

what's needed? pros and cons...

truck is a toy... forget price, most/all of it will be DIY

would it be better to sad the truck?
can the i6 fit in the 4runner? how much firewall mod would need to happen for it to sit back more...

lets have some fun... I'm more interested how to get an i6 rig really... with newer comfy, features... like AWD, power seats, 'modern' feel...

I know I could get a heep... but I've been so good keeping my wife happy not getting one (she doesn't like the way they look, while I could care less for it's look cause the 4runner looks better.. so do early broncos)

anyways... figure I should ask.. I'm curious.

I figure it'll be twice the length of the 3.4... or close to.

It would be very tight in there. An inline 6 is a long motor. That's the reason all the Supras whether they ran the 7M, 1JZ, or 2JZ had such a long hood and front end, was because of that straight six motor. I'm not sure that you would be able to fit it into the kinda short front end of the 3rd gen. I've never seen it done, but it's also not something I have gone out looking for.
 
Anything is possible. How are your Mechanical, Electrical, and Fabrication skills?

Since you're asking, I'm guessing you don't have that much experience in those areas.

Then there's whether or not you will have to comply with any Emissions laws.

My advice would be to buy a vehicle that came with the engine you want, from the Factory.

Personally, I've contemplated a modded 1GZ-FE swap into the 4Runner. But there's always too many other things taking my time, and the 4Runner does fine for what I use it for, with it's 5VZ-FE.
 
I highly doubt an inline 6 engine would fit in our engine bays. It's just not enough room once you factor in the short length and width. Most newer passenger cars, let alone SUV's are wider and longer than 4Runners.

Maybe in a 4th Gen though, since they have a V8 model and a larger engine bay to accomodate it.

the 1FZ-FE (or any F-series motor for that matter) is just colossal. Not just in length, but also oil pan to valve cover (or intake manifold) height. I'd be willing to bet there's no way it would fit in a 4runner without moving the firewall back a fair bit, cutting a hole in the hood and custom building a much fatter transmission tunnel, relocating seats, etc. Better off just buying a land cruiser.

Lot's of people have successfully swapped the 7m-gte into old school 4runners and mini trucks. 2JZ into a 3rd gen would be the logical choice if trying to replicate that in a newer platform. And I'm pretty sure there are some 2jz tacomas running around the interwebs, so it can definitely be done.

I know a guy locally who has a 2JZ-GTE swapped into a 2nd gen. I haven't actually seen it, but it's certainly possible to do. My family has an 80 series and a 40 series with the 2F and 3FE engines, and they're huge. I've never seen a 2JZ, but the F series are super tall and of course super long. I think besides the length of stuffing the 4.5L in, you would have to do quite a bit of work to make the hood able to close.
 
7MGTE swaps were common in 1st Gens. The engine bay is probably pretty close to the same size. No reason it shouldn't fit. It takes some cutting though.

man, this gives me fuel to throw in a 2jz in my 99 and get through registration!.... wow...

this thread gave me the 'terms' for me to go start googling over everything.. which shows they others have put in 1st gen/2nd gen... I'm positive 3rd gen is out there...

love what I'm finding on the engine... I think the 1jz might be short enough to fit without a body lift, 2.5L.... had a 3.3L in my 65 mustang and that was fun... but 1jz-gte would be a blast too, the 2jz-gte would fit, but I have a feeling it'll be alot of extra work from the added height.

the fact they offered up to 2005 really gets me happy... as regulations allow same or newer engine replacement.
