Hey guys my 06 v8 may have a problem. I was doing donuts in a parking lot covered in ice earlier and put it In 4lo then I decided to lock the critter diff since it was very slick I thought it would be OK. Alt two revolutions in I hear a pop. So I slow down and decide to back off. I come to a stop and realize at that point I could not drive forward any more. So I try to disengage it and still nothing.I looked underneath and can see the driveshaft from the motor to the transfer case spinning but the vehicle is but moving. Any ideas?

There is no shaft going from the motor to the t-case. One shaft from t-case to rear axle, and one from the t-case to front diff.

But let me get this straight, in a sarcastic way....
You were trying to do donuts (an action that requires 2 to 4 of your tires to be spinning loose)in a AWD vehicle,WITH the very aggressive center diff lock engaged that is designed to give you some very aggressive traction assistance?

You do understand that this is like holding down the accelerator while stopping, or shutting off your headlights to see in the dark.

Chances are you destroyed one if not both of your transfer case outputs. The good news is the transfer cases are not very expensive, the bad news is, they are a little hard to find.

My thoughts too. Not just the center diff being locked, but 4lo put all that extra torque on it which probably ripped them apart easily.

You say the parking lot was icy? By icy do you mean it had 3 inches of icy snow? If so, still a bad idea but you might have gotten away without damaging anything. Or was it blacktop with a thin film of ice? Either way, 4lo isn't necessary to do donuts, ESPECIALLY if you're locking the center diff.

I've seen polaris sportsman

messed up in the same manner, donuts on ice, at least in this case things were going ok until the quad hit a small area w/No ice, the 4wd didn't like that - i guess some tires kept spinning while others tried not to. Well good luck, let us know what you find.

ya i have to agree why 4lo??? i only use 4lo when going up hills off road. there is no need for it anyother time. but im guessing that you lost your t-case gears/chains (dont know what this center diff has)

If you're lucky, I'm gonna say you blew a CV axle. Since you have full time 4WD, the truck will not move if a CV axle is blown.

If the center diff is locked then atleast 1 rear tire would still turn even if both CV's are busted.

On the same topic though, would be wise to keep the center diff locked or open when doing donuts in full time 4wd? I read something about the center diff being weak when its slipping and engaging too much (ie. offroad)?

I would lock it just not in 4lo and make sure its all ice no part ice part asphalt

You'd have to disconnect the traction control plug under the hood. Otherwise locked or not, it won't move.

Lock front wheels a rear wheels move evenly so he would get some movement because the rear wheels have to move if the front are moving enough for traction control to notice the front moving faster than the other side

if the center diff is locked the front CANNOT spin with out the rear moving too

Speaking from experience, it's not gonna happen. I blew a CV axle a year ago and the truck wasn't going anywhere, center diff locked or not.

Ok the shaft coming out of the front of the transfer case is spinning but the vehicle is not moving. I originally put it on 4lo because I just bought it and was nit site of the last time it had been engaged or if it even worked. I know it was nit the smartest thing to do. But with all your wheels moving evenly donuts are way better. Your radius is way tighter. Look up the big fingers music video get your roll on and you will see what I am talking about.

Have you looked underneath the front of the vehicle and checked your CV axles? If your drive shafts aren't dangling underneath, there is a good chance it's just a CV axle.

is the rear shaft turning at all? If not then u busted something inside the TC. if both your shafts are turning then might be a front or rear diff. one of your axles or cvs should be turning though before trac sets in and holds you back if im not mistaken. Unless the brakes seized up on ya?

Wow I'm relieved. I busted an outer cv. Luckily I had already ordered new cv's with the upgraded high angle boots from cvj earlier this week because my inner boots were trashed.

Thanks for providing some relief for me guys.
