Icon failure

Is this expected of an icon shock? Not broken. Just unthreaded. No big deal. I like it when shit just unthreads itself :)

UPDATE: TURNS OUT THE THREADS RIPPED OUT.

It should be fine. Probably better than from the f'ing icon factory. But that's not cool. Now a respectable shop is going to fix it for free and probably not recover anything for their time from icon. Should just tell them to send a new one, how can I trust something that just unthreads???
 
Wow, I didn't even realize those threaded on :D First I've seen that...

Maybe put a tack weld on it after tightening it back on?

But yeah I'd call Icon and ask them what's up with that...
 
Always knew Icons weren't worth the money, sounds like they work for SPC!

j/k ... But I would notify them and have the whole Icon suspension looked over for any other mistakes. I'm surprised they don't stake the threads in some fashion.
 
I would email Icon, I've ran Icons for about 7 years now, and their customer service is top notch.
 
That cant be welded because they are dis-similar metals. Aluminum and Steel.

I have huge faith in Icon and the guys that run that shop, I've talked with all of them and toured their facilities. All top notch people and practices going on, BUT just like any man-made product, shit happens and it might have just missed being torqued properly. Throw some red Loctite on it and call it good.

I am running full Icon systems front and rear and couldn't be happier with my decision.
 
i had that happen with a set of bilstiens... its a manufacturing issue. they did not get the "eye" tight enough when putting it together. Icon should make this right for you. -this can happen to almost any shock.
 
Update. Shop confirmed threads aren't good as they appear and the hardened shaft threads peeled over the aluminum threads of the bottom mount.
A thought is now limiting straps which goes against the purpose of the extended travel rear shocks.

Icon is in the loop with my installer/supplier and some ideas will be tossed around. Ideally deeper threading, Or a softer bushing could all help. Or a steel mount!!

JB Weld? Will that help the weakness of the aluminum threads pulling out?

Any other thoughts?
 
I don't care if the bottom is permanently affixed to the shaft. If I need a new shaft I'll just replace the bottom piece too.

Limiting the last 1/2-3/4" of travel doesn't defeat the purpose of your long travel setup, it's the proper way to setup any suspension setup though that is going to see hard use.

Glad you are giving the guys at Icon the chance to make things right. I wouldn't waste my time using JB Weld or any crap like that. Sounds like the only proper fix is going to be to atleast replace the aluminum lower mount and maybe the shaft to make sure those threads aren't dicked up also.

Keep us posted as this progresses.

Thanks for the input. Straps may be a good solution in the end to keep it from happening again. As mentioned Icon has been contacted and are behind it 100% irregardless of whether it's pulled threads or unthreading or breakage.
The guy I deal with deals specifically with one guy at icon and wants to see what they can suggest or come up with for alternatives. Likely not going to see them produce a steel base but that would be nice. The installer here says it's definitely not the first time he has seen this with all brands. Although if you ask the manufacturer I'm the first guy it's ever happened to ;)
My guys suggestion is straps so that may be the right answer. May have to do the front ones while I'm at it.
 
In any case, your shocks should not be the limiting factors in your travel. They aren't really designed to "snap" at full extension like that, which is why that failure occurred. Limiting Straps are not a bad idea or perhaps a different valve shock and/or adjusting your panhard/trailing arms.

Again, I'm just somewhat surprised they didn't stake the threads. I'd figure it shouldn't be too big an operation to drill the bottom shaft and stake them, but this doesn't seem to happen often, so eh?

Icon always has good quality and customer support from what I hear. :)
 
I don't know what "staking the threads" is. Will this keep the threads from tearing out? I edited the earlier post to say that it was found they don't appear to have unthreaded but actually tore the threads out of the aluminum.

Did you catch that I changed the post and the shop confirmed that the shaft didn't unscrew and the threads in the aluminum ripped out. There are still partial threads there but it just slides on and off the shaft threads easily. The shaft threads are steel obviously and appear knife like sharp and new.

Also I have adjustable everything. Everything is pretty much at the shortest possible length which matches factory exactly as recommended by metaltechs install instructions. If I extend the uppers and lowers too much the tires will rub at the back of the wheel well when stuffed and I'm only running 265/75R17. Axle is centered side to side and wheels already come closer to rearward side of wheel well so lengthening will push tires into rear wheel well when stuffed.
I can lengthen uppers some which appears it would possibly get the lower shock mounts to rotate up and maybe provide a better angle to decrease torque on bottom end of shock shaft. Is that what your getting at with adjusting the upper and lowers etc?

Honestly im not sure it's a great shock design but I'm not sure a king or fox would be a lot different. It's steel threaded into 1/2" - 5/8" deep aluminum thread taking a shit ton of torque and pulling force at full droop especially when on extremely uneven ground when one tire is stuffed and on bump stop and the other is in the air. It bugs me that I can still see some thread in the aluminum housing yet it's loose and sloppy as heck when you slide it on the shaft thread. It just slips on and off. I question the tolerances on the threading. I would expect if it ripped out Of the hole would see a clean hole???

Maybe it's rare and I had a shock not torqued well into the bottom mount and loosened a bit and pulled out eventually.

No. If the shaft literally pulled out staking wouldn't do shit. Staking is when you use a metal punch on the rim to create a little metal obstruction to keep something from unscrewing. What they need is to create a pin that goes through the male and female connections to keep things from pulling and twisting.

ICON should take a look at the lot numbers and try to figure out if they sent out a bad batch of shocks.
