Idle help

I've read some threads but haven't seen exactly what I am looking for.

I had just had the truck in the shop to have a new head gasket put on and same with the water pump and timing belt.

I had just read on their receipt that they had cleaned the mass air flow sensor (which I had done recently) as well as the throttle body when they were in there.

So anyways I was driving and the cars check engine light came on and then the car started to make a chugging noise like it was out of gas, but it was full, so anyways I pull off ASAP. The RPM's started to fluctuate like crazy and then it lead to it stalling. It happened 3 times before it stopped and I was able to drive it home. The check engine light is off now unfortunately so I can't pull any codes, but am taking it to Toyota to have Toyota check it for recent codes.

But with the throttle body and MAF just being cleaned, could that have made the computer glitch for a second (that is what Toyota thinks might have happened when I called them)? Or what do you think could have caused it?

Also, its a 1999 SR5 4runner 3.4L V6 automatic and I can't seem to find the idle adjuster either.

Any help is greatly appreciated as I am stumped.

If not done carefully, cleaning the throttle body can cause some pretty strange driveability issues. I would take it back to whoever did the original work and tell them your problem. Hopefully they'll be fair with you and help you out. I run an independant shop in bellingham and our good name and reputation is all we have. An hour of our time to help a customer out and keep our good name is a no brainer. Hopefully they feel the same way.

And dont bother with the idle adjustment. its not the problem. Good Luck!

If not done carefully, cleaning the throttle body can cause some pretty strange driveability issues. I would take it back to whoever did the original work and tell them your problem. Hopefully they'll be fair with you and help you out. I run an independant shop in bellingham and our good name and reputation is all we have. An hour of our time to help a customer out and keep our good name is a no brainer. Hopefully they feel the same way.

Toyota did it. I called them right after and asked them and they said what I said "might have been a glitch in the computer but bring it in and we can pull up that recent code that disappeared"

They'll take care of ya then. Unfortunately the "glitch" was more than likely caused by them. Just dont let them up-sell you on a bunch of bs and get a second opinion if you have any doubts. Keep us updated with their findings.

I cleaned my TB when I did the t-belt service......although my problems were with higher idle speeds that would not come down after warm up. Answer was a stuck idle air control valve. It seems some carbon leaked into this valve during cleaning and mucked up the valve. This valve allows air to bypass the butterfly valve during warm up for the higher RPM. You can try taking it off to clean it. It's below the TB and has 2 small coolant lines and a vacuum line with an electric connector. Take off the TB and remove the valve......be sure to give it a good cleaning. I used MAF cleaner.... I'm not sure if this will solve your problem.... But it seems ur not getting either enough air or gas.....it's a quick job and pretty easy and free so it may be worth it.

Appreciate the info. I am not mechanically minded at all, though I did clean my own MAF a little while back, so I think I might be able to do this.

The TPS sensor was failing. So I just needed to replace it, even though I had just got it replaced, so must have been a faulty one. Seems to be running just fine now with a normal idle and no more shaking when stopped.
