Idle problems???

I picked up a 2005 4X4 Sport V8 over the weekend This is my first Toyota and I hope it lasts a long time like everyone says they will.

I've noticed the car is idling very high even after it warms up. If I take my foot off the brake pedal it takes off. I was up to 7mph going down a straight road when the AC compressor kicked on. Is this normal? It's not as bad when the AC isn't running.

Yes this is normal, all my vehicles raise their idle speed when the AC compressor is engaged.

The 4R does have a tendancy (sp) to surge forward when stopped at a light and the compressor kicks on. I wouldn't call this normal, but seems to be normal for the 4R.
I've also noticed this surge whan the heater kicks on too.

Hmmm, I haven't noticed this on my 4Runner! This surging off the line up to 7 mph w/o touching the gas pedal does NOT seem too cool either. I would have the dealer mechanics check for proper air/idle ratio settings and make the proper adjustments when the a/c or defroster are switched on. The engine speed is suppose to rise a bit to compensate for the drag that the A/C compressor has on the engine.
The latter is cool.....but you don't want the darn truck driving down the road at school zone speeds by itself!!!

7mph is nothing. I drove a car in high school with a flaky automatic choke that could hit 25 without touching the gas! Anyway, all modern EFI cars I've driven do what Walt describes. I'd be shocked if Toyota found anything wrong with his 4Runner.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to schedule an appointment and see what they say. I understand that most cars have an IACV but I thought this was a little much. I'm having to ride the brakes when driving through parking lots etc... b/c she's a movin..haha
